One Soviet general wrote in his memouars in 1970`s about the importance of North European plain and particularly the Baltics.
I dont remember the exact words but it went something like this : ''The Baltics is a place where we can never relax. If fallen in to enemy hands, they are like a bayonet - pointing directly at Leningrad and heartland surrounding Moscow. Otherwise, they are irrelevant''.
Same was said about Ukraine, Belarus and Caucasus.
That thinking is very much alive in 2015.
And that is reason why they are so unwilling to compromise on Ukraine. They lost the other countries, now Ukraine is next.
The Balkans in this context are irrelevant - the logistical and political nightmare of actually working with you is too troublesome.
Its not worth it.
Now, the idea of NATO attacking Russia is of course laughable to us. But that is not what the Russians are thinking.
Notice their hysteria whenever US sends a handful of tanks to the Poles, Romanians and the Baltics? They dont give a shit about those tanks and trainers.
They know what US is doing - it`s putting a stake in the ground, displaying that countries previously controlled by it have fallen in to hostile hands. They are very aware of what the Americans are doing - building the kind of an alliance, right at their borders,that choked it during the Cold War.
Russia is not a superpower. It`s a regional power whose grip on its periphery is slipping away.
Cold War was all about the German-Russian-American relationship.
Whoever controlled it, would emerge as the winner of the Cold War (that was the thinking at the time). Controlling countries behind both pieces of Germany was essential, especially considering the historical events and geopgraphical terrain.
Once again,that is why Yugoslavia was left out of the US-USSR competition - it didn`t matter as it posed no threat to any of the alliances
