Filmmaking was a marginal business at the turn of the 20th century, Jews in New York and California happened to be involved in it and things just took off from there. Look at the early history of the major movie companies based in Hollywood, you'll find Jews there right from the start.
Some would even argue that cinema is a fundamentally Jewish art form.
