That's not common core. That's just a shitty picture. It looks like any math problem I had back in my geometry classes in high school before CC, but some retard cannot into Pythagorean Theorem.

Turn it into a private business. The government has fucked our system for long enough and once Unions no longer have anyone to kuck, we can actually hire people worth a shit to teach children instead of senile shitters clogging up the classrooms.

Welcome to American government school.
Pic related.

>>55473593
Not needed really. Just 16*5
>>
>>55473442
I'm not understanding the problem with that question
This is a basic geometry thing. Find the area of the center rectangle, find the area of the two triangles next to it.
Alternatively, if you know your shit, combine the triangles into a rectangle and find the area of that and you only have to use the simple height x width of both rectangles

so one is 5x12 = 60^2
The triangles together make a square of 5x2, so 10^2

70^2 is the answer.

wait what the fuck, now i see it
that doesn't exactly make it a fault of common core, though, I saw issues like this when i was in school a decade and a half ago
>>
>>55473442
super easy.

5 x 12 = 60

12-16 = 4 divided by 2 = 2, 2x5 = 10 divided by 2 equals 5 x 2 = 10

the area is 70

no a2 + b2 = c2 needed

>>
>>55474027
>>55474085
>>55474224
first of all, it's unitless, so it's just 'square units' not cm.

second, if the legs are the same length the top is centered so the base minus the top divided by 2 is the length of each triangle's base

it's 12 * 5 + {2 *} 2 * 5 {/ 2} where units inside braces cancel.

answer is 70

It is fundamentally flawed, and would require square-one, ground-up restructuring, but:

Stop giving it so much money.
Stop using whichever companies that make the curriculum and books (I don't personally know of an alternative)
Teach things that matter (how to live in modern society)
Quit teaching bullshit nobody wants or needs; leave a bunch of stuff for college if they really want it
Explain to kids WHY they need to learn certain things
Separate public schools into good, medium, bad (or just good/bad), like germany (so the niggers dont drag the rest of us down)

It's not "from the drawing", it's pure numbers. The shape presented is impossible on a basic geometric level because the length of the sides has overdetermined the parameters.

you don't have to 'teach' me how to find the area of something. i just know, because i'm not stupid. that's how it literally is with people that aren't stupid. you don't really have to teach them. you just tell them. "multiply the two dimensions". from that, any reasonably intelligent person could extrapolate pretty much 99% of trigonometry, and then start re-discovering calculus with a little effort.
>>
>>55474438
The problem is that 8^2 - 5^2 ≠ 2^2. And if that is the case as the diagram states, the figure is not a trapezoid so you can't use the standard trapezoid area formula to find this object's area.

are you trying to use the Pythagorean theorem? you made a mistake if you were.

it's a2 + b2 = c2
your value of 4 is = c2. to get c, ie the base of the triangle, take the square root of both sides. sqrt(4) = 2.
>>
>>55475523
those are right triangles, which are halves of a square.
>>
>>55474663
But it does because there is no standard formula for the area of this object.
>>
>>55475523

No. You remove the central "square" 5x12 (60)

That leaves two triangles, 2x5x8. Fit the two triangles together and you have a 2x5 (10) rectangle.

>you made a mistake if you were

No, he's right.

a2 + b2 = c2

a2 + 5^2 = 8^2

8^2 - 5^2 = a^2

64 - 25 = 39

square root of 39 is 6.24~
>>
>>55473442
>>55474611
>>55474932
>>55475061
I see what's happening now, I totally overlooked the point of the picture.
it could be a trapezoid, but not as presented. the base would be way more than 16 and the height couldn't be 5.

the base would have to be what, 64 - 25 = sqrt(39) so its base would be 12 + 2*sqrt(39) which is ~24.49.
>>
>>55475538
Does it really matter though? You don't need to use the Pythagorean theorem to solve it. Just assume the shape is a trapezoid like you're supposed to and solve.
>>

Because if 12 is perpendicular to 16 then the 5/2/8 triangle is a right angled triangle.
If it is, then it is subject to Pythagoras's theorem.
Pythagoras's theorem states that 8^2-5^2 = the square of the base.

It does not equal 4, it equals 39, so the base is not 2. If you can't see that it's retarded I question whether you went to school past age 10.

Switch from funding education using property taxes to some other tax that doesn't depend on property values. Funding schools based on the richness of their surrounding neighborhoods is just making the whole poor people are dumber problem worse.

Require more rigorous training to be able to teach in schools. It's arguable one of the most socially important jobs in existence so I'm not sure why we sometimes let shitheads get away with doing it. The unions and tenures don't help.

Create a tiered system where kids can learn at a better pace. Instead of smart kids being bored out of their minds and dumber kids having no idea what's going on, everyone can learn to their own abilities.

Stop teaching to tests and teach to subject matter. Incorporate more life skills like finance and less "how to bubble in the right answer 101. "

Interesting, but when was the "academic turning point"? The 60's? Sure, compulsory education is bad in the way we've seen, but at least back then our young people were learning, right? As opposed to the utter retardation and brainwashing that kids have to go through today. There has to be a way we can go back to something similar to what we used to have.

a can be anything from 0 to 130. Angle EDB=130-a, angle DEC=150-a, angle BCA=a+10. These equations place no limit on the value of a. Can easily solve using linear algebra once you have a system of equations.

this guy gets it.

Fun fact - NASA discovered a giant system of fissures on some moon or something, that form a perfect square. They assumed it was from a meteor impact creating magma, which then cooled a cracked. However, when this happens, it produces hexagons, due to some kind of physics shit. But because the area was so huge, the curvature of the planet had to be taken into account, and it formed a square instead, but with larger than normal angles.

The dotted line in the problem is just that... Dotted. Meaning slightly less clear than the other ones. You could say its blurred and therefore rape.

I don't get why people are so obsessed with manufacturing jobs. They are low tier employment that is slowly being phased out in the face of cheap foreign labour and mechanization. Sure let kids work at factories or whatever but our education system should start leaning more towards a tertiary sector economy assuming the average individual will work in a field like engineering, programming, teaching, human resources, marketing, law etc. Jobs that require specific knowledge instead of ten minutes of a guy showing you how to assemble one part of a car that you will do for 8-12 hours a day.

The line that is measured 5 is not explicitly stated as the altitude, so to make this a trapezoid we have to assume that it is not perpendicular to the base

While i understand why this problem doesnt work dur to pythagorean theory, yhis was probably just a problem for students to practice their area calculating formula on.

It seems unreasonable to expect every microsoft word drawn problem to be evaluated in this way when it is clearly just for the sake of students learning

Area of a trapezium = ((a+b)÷2)×h

Hop off your high horses fags. We have far worse problems in the education area than to be worrying about these pedantic little issues.

We must regain dominance over the yellow man if we can hope to be masters of the world again.
>>
>>55482076

see >>55479773

If you assume the 12 and 16 sides are parallel, there is no possible connection you can make between them that has a length of 5. Since the altitude is the shortest possible distance, any angle other than perpendicular will just worsen the problem.

Quarantine nigs back into their own schools, get rid of unions, get rid of leftist kike, crypto-kike, and good goy teachers and professors.

Most Importantly: end legal protection for college loans. Currently, if you declare bankruptcy, the only debt that can't be wiped out is college loan debt, hence colleges are awash in idiot nigs with low GPAs and shit degrees that ensure failure in life. By changing the laws so that bankruptcy can wipe out student debt loans, the colleges would be forced to hire actual professors and push valuable degrees while cutting back on idiot nig SJW quotas.
