I'd say it's closer to Game of Thrones than anything. Both the book and the show do an amazing job of showing the difference and similarities in cultures between the Norse and the Saxons. The characters are pretty well portrayed too, Alfred is no warrior but he's stone cold and works towards his goal, and everyone has relatable flaws.

I really loved the atmosphere, and the first 5 seasons are great. The quality didn't really start dipping until that disgusting midget Jew Donny showed up in season six, but drop in quality wasn't that bad until a few seasons later. Even then, it was still better than any other sitcom on TV.
I basically stopped watching sitcoms when Frasier ended. I mean, what was I going to watch? Big Bang Theory? Two and Half Men? I I don't mind Charlie sheen, but god damn that show is pretty much a monument to the degenerate bullshit that Hollywood stands for.
