For your information, Chernobyl catastrophe happened when staff there were conducting an experiment. So it was an experiment that gone wrong not a lack of safety of the reactor. The type of moderator on the reactor was what the professor was talking about. They still used lead bars which would melt into the reactor if it overheated and couldn't be removed. As opposed to much safer water moderators.

What do you mean still? It was normal at that time and had not caused any problems before the experiment. After that USSR drew conclusions and upgraded the safety regulations. Not only USSR - other countries too. This event led to reevaluation of the safety requirements by the whole scientific community. Everything happens the first time. You can't always foretell everything. Your professor is just a lying shill. US had no means of knowing details about USSR's reactor design at that time and proposing help 'cause it was secret at the time and USSR and US had not started cooperating in that field.

I mean, they intentionally disabled the few safety features that the reactor had, then brought the power down to dangerously low levels, which caused the coolant to stop circulating. That caused a steam explosion, which exposed the reactor to the outdoors, and Chernobyl had no outer shell to contain the released particles. Why the hell were they performing an experiment that required them to bring down the safety features?
