AFAIK, besides from paying for leasing the land, Russia was also delivering gas to Ukraine at a lower price.
If Ukraine wouldn't have lost Crimean peninsula, they could have leased the land to e.g. NATO, which could give them a bargaining hand in joining NATO and possibly even EU.

When the USSR fell, Ethnic Russians were separated from their home country by arbitrary national borders. They are now being brought back home. The people of Crimea are Russian and have been waiting for over 20 years for this day.
I don't know why everyone acts like this is a bad thing. Just know that a lot of people support a Greater Russia!
