I hope trump supporters recognize the wall is a massive public works project, and therefore the largest proper use of Keynesian economics in history.
[Proper] Keynesian theory hasn't been employed since the great depression.
The cycle is supposed to go that when the economy goes bad, the government cuts taxes to spur growth, while also dumping money into beneficial public works projects. As the economy gets a circulation and investment boost from the tax cuts, the citizenry remains employed in a useful task. As the useful tasks are completed and public employment tapers off, the market has grown enough to reabsorb them. The economy then gets to coast along merrily for a time, and taxes can be reintroduced to replenish the government coffers.
The key is that the federal spending has to be on a project that is itself a long term benefit to the system. The dams and bridges and buildings built during the depression facilitatedthe US economy for the past 80 years.
What did we do in 2008? Did we fix our D-grade highways, did we build modern efficient power plants, did we fund or foster culture and learning and heritage or nationalist unity as in the depression?
No, we just took a 2 trillion dollar loan out, gave it to bankers, then gave them the world's tiniest tax increase.
Trump wants a tax cut and the greatest piece of economic and labor protection America could ask for to be built.
He'd run a high deficit for his first term, he could just up taxes 5% in his 2nd term and balance the budget while having fostered a massive growth spurt while ensuring that the middle and lower classes are the ones who end up being employed by that growth.
Trumps' wall would last for 100 years at least, providing economic protection for generations and paying for itself a million times over.
