This. I'm taking a criminal justice elective right now and it keeps coming back to this. We discussed solutions/reforms for a while, but the only thing that sounds even remotely sane is to stop incarcerating low level crimes and turn to other forms of punishment like fines, probation, community service, etc.
We could also start looking at trying to lower recidivism rates, but it's pretty debatable how effective any type of reform would actually be. Killing off the dangerous ones sounds great, but we live in a time and place where criminal rights are held in incredibly high regard. Making criminals "more hirable" sounds great, but who wants to hire someone who was in prison over a law abiding citizen? Who wants to give a free education to someone who broke the law over the kid busting his ass through school? There is also the issue with a lot of these people going right back to the same neighborhoods and culture that got them in trouble in the first place when they get out. But honestly, where else do they have to go?
In the past, we actually saw a lot of really good things happening in terms of lower recidivism rates, lower inmate violence, and even lower prison costs when we had more forms of inmate labor. Unfortunately, this fucks with the surrounding economy, so now we have laws blocking most forms of industrialized inmate labor.
It's all in all a no win situation. We want to give criminals a second chance because we would rather them be productive members of society rather than burdens on the taxpayers. At the same time, we don't want to provide them with privileges that honest citizens don't get. Cutting back on the incarceration of low level crimes is the only solution I see, personally.
