He has talked about this in some of his videos, basically he wants to be a political commentator on radio or podcast formats, but wanted to make youtube videos of his content, and gaming is the biggest market on youtube, and he plays games and is good at them, so he combined the two.
Personally I find it really interesting to watch the gameplay while I listen, but you can just listen while on other tabs if it distracts you. I think graphs or him talking into the camera would be boring, there are a million videos like that on youtube. Good to be different.
