The US prospered because it was mostly uninhabited and had vast reserves of natural resources. In America the government literally gave land away for the asking while in Europe land ownership was generally the privilege of the elite. Basically this allowed every single american to become a self sufficient farmer.

Slavery actually hampered our economic growth. Only the top 1% of southerners owned slaves, and slaves represented free labor. The average white southerner couldn't compete with free labor when they had families to feed, which resulted in large scale poverty across the south. Big reason why blacks and rednecks have an animosity to each other.

> slave free labor
> reason why blacks and rednecks have an animosity to each other

Could you try not to be retarded for five minutes? Just five minutes a day and see where that takes you?

There has never been a redneck born who could grasp that level of nuance in economics and labor. Even today you could take 1000 rednecks and draw the lines through all the dots and demonstrate beyond doubt that relationship and they still wouldn't get it, living in today's world.

The "animosity" ... and, y'know, fuck the $10 college words: it's pure, distilled hatred ... exists because the dregs of society require someone or something below them to vent their hatred and frustrations upon. Someone with black skin is easy to see visually and they are clearly lower in the social order because they are slaves. It's that simple.

Your poor redneck living in a house with a pigshit floor was so fucking miserable they needed someone to blame, someone to hate for their poverty-infested excuse for an existance. It was outside their ability to comprehend why they were so poor and who was doing it to them, so they whoreshipped the rich people because by doing so they might magically be that rich person someday somehow by virtue of also being white. Because blacks were the slaves, the creatures that weren't human, just animals to be rage-whipped when a redneck needed to bear something up that couldn't fight back.

A couple hundred years over a dozen generations of moonshine-soaked breeding and you have the hatred baked into the very genetics.

Or, as we refer to them today: Republicans. The ultimate keks.

Ben Franklin himself founded the first abolitionist organization, and gave stated one of the major reason we needed to separate from great britain was because of their upholding of the institution.

Also, Washington freed his slaves after the founding of our republic.
>>
>>55447224
Of course not. If so, Central and South America would have prospered just as much as the US.

The US prospered because European colonists created a culturally European country.
>>
>>55449181
Yeah I was thinking Franklin he was the more forward thinking founder.

The only reasons slaves of the founders were given liberation is because it was promised to them if they served as cannon fodder for the American militias fighting the crown.

No more, no less. You hired a Scottish naval many to control your "navy lel" to fire upon our anti slave ships because you continued the practice of slavery long after we outlawed it.

This isn't open for debate, it's fact.
>>
>>55449293
Can you link me some literature to read on the subject? I'd love to learn more about it.

I've always known the whole narrative "oh the founders were ebul racists" was bullshit, but it doesn't surprise me that our government would do questionable things like that

>Or, as we refer to them today: Republicans. The ultimate keks.

You mean the party that freed the slaves? The party of Martin Luther King, Jr.? It's only a relatively recent development that Republicans have become the party of poor Southern whites. There are still plenty of old Southerners around who were Democrats. It wasn't until Nixon that the party demographics changed.

The enormous irony is that we really would be better off economically. Our own government has grown into such a worse entity than the crown was, we pay far higher taxes than we did under the crown, our economic mobility is hampered much more as well. It does sadden me.

>and slaves represented free labor.

Slaves aren't free. You have to buy them, feed them, house them from the elements, and pay for security so they don't escape. But I take it all you mean is slaves are cheaper than hiring a free man, but if slaves are cheaper...

>Only the top 1% of southerners owned slaves

...How could that be? It sounds like slaves were expensive, explaining why so few people could afford to own them. Maybe slaves were only profitable with economies of scale over long periods of time. Or maybe they were also low in supply, so those 1% had to bid very high to own them.

>The average white southerner couldn't compete with free labor when they had families to feed

So if slaves are prohibitively expensive, that doesn't make sense. But let's ignore that. Let's say they can't compete with slaves for the sake of argument. It still doesn't make sense because only 1% of the population owns slaves. Are those 1% the only employers in the south? It stands to reason that a portion of the other 99%, would also be employers, who don't have slaves, and must resort to hiring free men.

But what you really mean is on some level slaves displaced the free southern worker, specifically in agriculture, and drove their wages down. That's true. But slavery also made agrarian products cheaper, so everyone's purchasing power for those products increased - they have more goods than before.

X group's wages don't matter when measuring the prosperity of an economy as a whole. By this logic, going back in time and selling slaver's robots to do the work would harm their economy, even though we just added robots (wealth) to their economy, slaves are also wealth.

But after all this I agree slavery actually hampered the south's economic growth, for different reasons. Slaves don't gain human capital, which is the most important resource. An educated slave that is free to produce or provide what he desires is a greater asset to the economy than a cotton picker.
