As someone who lived in Detroit for 24 years, you have to experience it to understand it.
I didn't ever want to be racist, I tried for years to be "progressive" and treat everyone equally. But spending that much time in a place like that wears on you. Gang and criminal involvement among blacks is higher because drug dealing allows for big profit margins, and higher income is seen as a positive thing among poor blacks, it's a self feeding loop that keeps popping out uneducated criminals and promoting gang culture.
