Since school shootings in the USA seem to be perpetrated by young people, why doesn't the government just raise the age to get guns? As in, you'd still be able to get any kind of gun you want after you hit age 30 or something, 27 for pistols, 24 for long guns?
Obama or the government or whoever could say every time there's a school shooting, the age to be able to purchase will increase by one year or something?

A large amount of responsibility falls upon the parents, but we have to ask WHY so many kids are wanting to shoot schools. In the 30s a 12 year old kid could order a Thompson through the mail and have it delivered to his house. Firearms we almost completely unregulated back then all the way up until the NFA was enacted. Why were mass shootings outside of organized crime unheard of back then? What has changed in our society to cause this? What has changed in our children to cause this?
School shootings are the symptom of a much more serious problem with our culture. Just removing the opportunity for kids to get guns is like giving someone an aspirin to treat a fever caused by major infection. Sure bringing the fever down can make things better short term but if the infection continues to go untreated the patient will die.

Could be, it makes some sense. The problem is there has been no real comprehensive study on the subject. The left says guns are at fault, the right says mental health is too neglected in America or media overexposure. You can probably infer I lean towards the right wing mentality but I think leaving it at that is an easy but worryingly shallow answer. If we put effort into fully studying and understanding this admittedly complex issue I think we'd stand a better chance of fixing this problem without restricting the rights of the close to 100 million Americans who can handle firearm ownership responsibly.

No, the reason people shoot up schools is they are gun free zones.. If we repeal ALL gun laws and impose better penalties on the use of a firearm in commission of a crime we would be all set. The penalty for use of a gun in commission of a crime should be mandatory death with their choice of firing squad (five people using 22lr) hanging (pulled up onto gallows by neck, no trap door bullshit) or fight a grizzly bear to the death (potential to win and be absolved of your crime), maybe crsifiction and drawing/quartering.
