Trump didn't say that China was in the TPP. He said that the TPP would give them a backdoor. China has trade deals with countries and will use them to effectively tunnel goods into the US.

Yes, China was invited and isn't participating in the near future by their own choice.
It follows that they see no tangible benefit from it since they don't want to participate. Some even argue that TPP is an American sponsored initiative to check China's trade influence. Yet Trump wants people to believe that this agreement that has no input from China is somehow framed to benefit China. It makes no sense, but it falls nicely within his original rhetoric.

TPP is pretty worthless and China couldn't give a less of a shit if the U.S. digs itself into a bigger deficit with small third world shitholes.
China's standards are too low in many areas for TPP, particularly in protection of IP, but a US-China bilateral investment treaty is in the works which may be a stepping stone for them to eventually enter TPP.
