Why haven't you picked up a skilled trade yet, anon?
Engineers, doctors, nurses, and other in demand fields need not respond to the question edition.

>be me, licensed journeyman electrician
>arrive at work at 6:00
>BS and drink coffee with coworkers for 30 minutes before we do anything
>tell younger helper guys what to do for the day
>look at blue prints and decide what to do myself.... working on the $3 million dollar heating and air system looks like a good task for today
>go up to the roof and drill 1 hole
>climb back down and make sure helpers aren't fucking things up and are staying busy
>climb back up to the roof, drill 3 more holes, climb back down to check on helpers and go to lunch
>return from lunch and drill one last hole, climb back down, and move a piece of conduit, and call it a day at 2:30.

So I've got to say that being an electrician isn't a bad gig at all. I got paid about $30/hour in a low cost of living area plus full benefits (disability/health/dental/eye/matching 401k/HSA/etc) to basically supervise a few helpers, drill 5 holes in sheet metal decking, and move one piece of conduit.

Are you working in a trade? If so, what is your average day like? If you aren't working in a trade or another high demand skilled area (nursing, engineering, medicine, etc), why aren't you learning a skill which is in demand and pays well?

I think they're more than happy to go anywhere they can to make money as there is no money to be made in Philippines.
>>
>>55395875
Classes aren't strictly required, but there is basically zero demand for people who have no experience in the field.

Most people who got into this trade did it by one of two paths:
1) knowing someone who got them their first job
2) attending a trade program which trained them in basic skills and them hooked them up with their first job. That's how I got into the trade. I had the chance to spend half of my junior and senior years of high school at a votech program and I chose to be trained as an electrician's apprentice.

going to college for ENI, state certification intimidates me though. I am not sure I can force myself to memorize the entire code book, its fucking boring as shit and most of its just there to inflate property values and suck the insurance companies dick.

>>
>>55396092
You don't have to memorize the entire NEC. You'll pick up on the basics just by doing routine work and most of those are what you need to know.

There are some detailed things in the NEC that you'll need to know, but you can always look them up once you have a need to. For example, a few months ago I had to move some 480v to 277v step down transformers, but I wasn't sure how far they had to be from the walls, so I looked it up before doing the move.

Dewalt and Code Check both produce awesome guides to the NEC and building codes. I keep several of their laminated spiral bound guides in my big bag.

Yes, I got my start in trade school. The program I did cut my time to apply for my license in half (from 4 years down to 2 years full time work experience) because of taking the classes.

Trade school isn't strictly required, but it often helps you get your foot in the door. My personal experience is that the larger more professional contractors value people who went to trade school while the smaller contractors don't give a damn.

>>
>>55396739
>robots are gonna take all those jobs, why even bother

I really think it would be next to impossible to replace trades like plumbers, electricians, and HVAC techs without radically altering how buildings are made.

There is so much variety and complexity in what we do that it would be impossible for a robot to replace us UNLESS all buildings are 3D printed or something.

For example, today I had to go up and down stairs about 15 times, climbed up and down a service ladder 10 times, and went up and down on a scissor lift 3 or 5 times. We don't even have robots than can climb stairs, let alone ladders, so I'm not worried about robots replacing me anytime soon.

They key thing is that most types of skilled trades work involve a lot of moving around the building all day long robots can hardly walk in a straight line on two legs at the moment.

Nope. My work involves doing problem solving at almost every minute of the day. Do you know how many factors are involved with something as seemingly simple drilling a hole for a HVAC unit?

You just let me know what you think is involved and I'll show you how wrong you are.

Secondly, a big part of my pay grade is paying me for my experience and ability to supervise less skilled workers and enabling them to be productive.

It takes at least 4-5 years to learn the very basics of the electrical trade because there is so much variety involved. That mastery and ability to solve problems and supervise multiple helpers are what my employer is paying for.

This is what I like about working in the trades. Everyday is like being paid to go to the gym because we're climbing something, lifting something, kneeling and stooping, crawling through something, and basically doing anything except sitting all day.

About the nigger jokes..... We have an African American temp worker on our site who didn't show up today. After realizing that he pulled a no-show no-call for work we started a rumor that he hasn't been seen since a few coon dogs cornered him up a tree.

Trades are about the last place where a man can be a man around other men. The shit we talk about at work would get us fired in a heart beat in any warehouse, factory, or office environment.

Well, if you had the skills necessary to run a job site and supervise lesser skilled workers, that's what you'd be doing. But if you don't have that skill, and believe me it takes years and years of experience to gain, you're going to have to do more working and less supervising if you want to have a job.

Pretty much this. Being an electrician does involve doing some physical work, but it's more about being a knowledge worker at the journeyman and master levels.

Any idiot can be a secretary and almost any idiot can be a school teacher. But not any idiot can be a licensed journeyman electrician/plumber/HVAC tech/other skilled trade.

I work an office gig, but I more or less get to set my own hours. Normally I'm at work between 5:30 and 6:30, well before anybody else, and I cut out 8 hours later. Don't take a lunch because I'd rather go home early.

I think welders must have certificates before they can start working. You'd want to look for a community college which offers welding certificate classes or a votech that does the same.

Electricians can either start by doing trade school or knowing someone who gets them their first job. If you don't know an electrician who can get you your first job, you'll have to go to trade school.

>Trades are for rednecks and social outcasts who never shower, smell lke shit, smoke pack of cigs, drink like shit and who will have a broken back by the age of 40

Office jobs are for limp wristed faggot mama's boys who still live in their parents basement, can't get laid, and have basically no training to only a few weeks worth of training to do their jobs, yet feel superior to people who have 4-5 years training to do their jobs.

Office workers frequently cower when a more alpha construction worker shows up because they can't even change their own tire and have to call road side assistance, so they basically know that the construction worker would beat the shit out of them in front of any woman.

Office workers are more likely to die prematurely than constriction workers because they have soft pussies and sit around on their ass all day. Their hears are weak, their muscles and bones are weak, and their immune systems are weak. And all of that sitting on their asses all day guarantees they'll have cardiovascular problems while men who actually work all day have basically none.
>>
>>55401046
>Sorry for the stupid question what is a trade school? Like "University of Phoenix" or whatever?

No. University of Phoenix is a ....... university.

You want to find a place which teaches skills in things like plumbing, welding, automotive technology, cosmetology, etc. These are applied skills and places that teach them will often be called a votech, technology center, or some other similar name.
>>

>I want to be able to look back at what I've done and be proud of myself

IMO, a better goal is being proud of what you helped other people do. A few weeks ago I trained two guys who had zero experience on how to bend and install conduit. I basically supervised their work, did all of the thinking for them, and enabled them to learn the basics of a new skill while avoiding doing any physical work myself.

When the shift ended, both of them were pulling people over to the spot to show off their work and were commenting on how good the conduit run looked and were generally quite proud of what they'd accomplished.

Could they have done it without me? Not a chance. Did I help them learn a new skill which will benefit them in the future? Absolutely.

Taking the piss out of people is a huge part of the culture of tradesmen. Americans generally don't know how to take the piss or handle getting it taken out of em..... but American tradesmen can banter right up there with the Aussies.

It's the best decision I've ever made. I should have done it years ago. I work with a master plumber who makes $100+hr, and has all the work he'll ever want. HVAC is even easier to get work in, in my state you don't even need certification.

>>55403141
Me too brother, I'm 40k in debt for school loans(liberal arts, yeah I know), but it is what it is. I don't think our parents know how shitty/competetive white-collar work has become. Trades are really the only choice for a smart white guy these days, if you have the skill and intelligence you'll do way better than an office drone.

Would doing civil engineering or electrician work get some experience for a job after I get out?

It's pretty fuckin' neato. Working mornings is great if you can handle to early rise. It's my day off today and I slept in, got up at 5:30AM. It's really helped my sleeping patterns to, I used to be all over the joint after 10 years of night shifts. Would recommend. Depends on where you live, but yeah, I'd be stoked on $30hr. I also live in a city where you can buy a nice house for $60-80k. $30hr at 40 hrs a week is $4,800 a month before taxes. I could easily have a mortage of $800 a month if I wanted, leaving me with a good amount of cash left over.
>>
>>55404521

Half the appeal for my hourly wage is the fact it is what I make of it - sure, it would be 4800 if I put in the bare minimum, but pulling 50+ hour weeks reaps in the rewards.

Enjoyable work too, so I don't even mind working late/overtime.
>>
>>55403961
>Don't kid yourself, I have very rarely seen any contruction worker or in general a tradesmen who looked in shape, you are all smelly fat/skinny slobs.

That's because our work is appraised based on actual skill, which means skilled men are extremely difficult to replace and not appearance.

I can show up to work without shaving for 3 days or 3 weeks and no one will say shit to me because it would take my company 6-12 months to find an similar replacement. I can also chose not to come to work for the day or for a week with the same result -- unless I pulled such an act during one of our mission critical times, but we only have those 3-5 times per year at my current company.

Do you have the freedom to decide not to shave for 3 days or 3 weeks at your current job? Can you show up to work in jeans or refuse to tuck in your shirt without your boss jumping down your throat because you're easy to replace?

How long does it take to train someone to do your job? Would it take 4-5 years at 40+ hours a week? That's how long it took to train me and that's why I can neglect to shave, take a day off anytime I want, or come to work without my shirt being tucked in. Do you have the same freedom at work?

You can do that as soon as you leave helper mode, I got mad at my first shop and found a shop offering me basically double the same fucking day I decided to look for a new shop. It's crazy how easy it is to move around once a shop knows you can run any type of call solo.

If unions are a thing in your area, I'd recommend it. If you're from a non-union area, I wouldn't recommend it.

Think of the IBEW as a temp service who sends men out in response to calls from employers. You'll face lay offs pretty often. Private employers usually don't treat their employees this way unless they really dislike them or all of their work dries up.

I'm stuck wanting to be a Carpenter (currently in the apprenticeship) but keep thinking about switching to electrician or welder.

I think the startup costs for welder is higher and thus I'm leaning more towards electrician. I really do want to be a carpenter but I've noticed illegals have really infested the field and the old timers are constantly warning me about staying with carpentry is most likely a death wish at this rate.

Any trade anons willing to give me some advice?
>>
All tradesmen I know stink like cigarettes, have ignorant opinions and they all seem to have back issues at age 45.
I'd much rather be a working class white collar worker than a stinky working class man that speaks with a drawl, spends all his money on nonsense and has back problems.

I'm an assistant commercial underwriter for BBVA, currently making $37k a year. I can make up to $60k once I become a senior underwriter and move anywhere else I want within the company.
>>
>>55406309
I work in Texas and my experience is that about 80% of electricians are Mexicans. I don't know about carpenters, but I'd guess that 95% of them are Mexicans.
>>

You're quite the classist there with your assumptions.

Enjoy your life of poverty. My first year apprentices who have zero experience earn the same wage you're currently getting.

>You sure about that? Every state requires your 608 to handle gas, you can get around it easy though.

I'm probably wrong. I think you don't have to have a ton of schooling to do HVAC, but you do with plumbing, is that correct? That's my shitty understanding with a month of experience. I'm in PA. I thought that lots of guys(journeymen) work under someone else's(master plumber) cert, is that right?

Carpentry is only good once you really prove yourself, it's fucking rough otherwise. Plumber, electrician, and hvac are the big guys right now. Unions pay like garbage at the start though.

I really think you should stick with carpentry if you like it though, it's better to have a trade you honestly like and suffer through a few years of low wages than get paid more early on but hate your trade.
>>
>>55407081
>I'm probably wrong.
You are, you technically need your EPA cert.

>I think you don't have to have a ton of schooling to do HVAC
I have none.

>but you do with plumbing, is that correct?
Nah, same deal.

>I'm in PA. I thought that lots of guys(journeymen) work under someone else's(master plumber) cert, is that right?
When it comes to just business wise you only need one cert holder so yeah, shit's so lax there is a set going rate for renting certs though (it's 500 bucks a month). HVAC is the same way though in basically every state where someone needs to hold an air cert in the company.

That EPA shit is a federal regulation though, gotta have that 608.
