Good thing you can fall back on actual history books that teach you about him being the only president presiding over the debt being paid off. In my AP US History class he was basically presented to us as a giant badass who saved the country multiple times in a row and told the establishment to go fuck itself. We actually spent WAY more time learning about him than any other president, period. Washington? Barely a footnote. Lincoln? Maybe a week. AJ completely took over a whole month or more, only Thomas Jefferson and Teddy Roosevelt competed with him in importance. Woman teaching the class was based.

My school never went too in depth about him, I learned a lot about Jackson because I was pretty interested in American history growing up.

One of the best stories about Jackson is when he got into a duel with purportedly the best duelist in the country.
Jackson pistol discharged first and the famed duelists skillfully shot him in the stomach. Etiquette was that the duel would end there. Instead, (with his stomach wound) Jackson laboriously reloaded his pistol and shot the "gentleman" straight through the head. And I'm sure he deserved it because Jackson was a badass with great judgement.

You should know this wasn't a monumental achievement. This was a time in history where the most influential government job was the Postmaster General because the US post was the biggest department in the entire government.
Paying off the national debt was party politics. The US was pulling in so much money in Tariffs it didn't matter that Jackson's Indian removal was millions over-budget. Previous presidents like John Q. wanted to invest that money in a series of national improvements, roads, canals, schools, libraries, public works, he even suggested a national observatory. Jackson wanted to divest the money to overseas creditors for his own personal aggrandizement to no real gain for the simple farmers who voted for him.
Alexander Hamilton had modeled the US treasury off of GB, and thought a level of debt would encourage investment and stimulate financial growth in the infant country (it worked too). Jackson was a backwater lawyer with an irrational mistrust of banks and a limited conception of economics in general. He appealed to the prejudices of a nation of yeoman farmers who shared his faulty understanding of banks.
