The Great Cultural Revolution was an event in 1960s in China where university aged students from the cities were brainwashed with extremist ideological views and set about attacking people who disagreed with them; first they tried to destroy culture, then they attacked their teachers. They flooded the streets with violent protesting. Eventually they over threw the leader of China and put their ideological master, Mao Zedong back in power.

If I am not mistaken many SJW professors in American universities are explicitly Maoist. They think the Cultural Revolution would have worked if Mao had not died and been replaced by conservatives.
Note that another feature of Maoist ideology is constant revolution. Culture must constantly be challenged or it will regress. So you can't appease these people, they are obliged to harass you and each other perpetually for the sake of the greater good.
And also it is significant that Mao only started the Cultural Revolution because he was being usurped in the Politburo, and he needed to disrupt opposing ideological movements. He may not have believed this stuff himself.
