You're right but ignorance is at the root of bad parenting. Ignorance of good values like responsibility and discipline which leads to further ignorance of academic subjects which inevitably affects their children's upbringing. It's a terrible spiral of general incompetence. That is not to say that children can't escape from the cycle on their own but they will have to learn everything the hard way, through trial and error, because their parents have failed them as you put it. Learning through trial and error works but it causes much suffering and can embitter people for life. This is also the fault of the incompetent parents.

parents should encourage wholesome pursuits but they should not force them
and a child need 100% support from their parents in their activities
