Yeah, the thing that you have to understand about the Boston highway network is that it was only HALF-BUILT and thus it was always over-capacity. Then, they tried to ameliorate the congestion in the center of the city by expanding one of the highways going into the city and burying it. Of course, this being Massachusetts, the unions got their cut, the contractor cut massive corners, and the execution was shit, leading to another highway expansion that still was overcapacity. It didn't help that slabs of concrete were falling on cars or that giant icicles were falling from the Zakim Bridge's suspension wires and impaling people.

It's hilarious how you mention the streetcar network btw, given the fact that the Green Line is the only remaining part of the streetcar network.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Interstate_695_(Massachusetts)
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Southwest_Corridor_(Massachusetts)

Boston's never going to get its shit together btw. They still mandate parking minimums for city developments despite the fact that the streets are parking lots as they are and Boston drivers are like screeching hellspawn behind the wheel.

Glasgow subway is like the third oldest in the world after london and budapest I think. Some of the stations are like toilets, I think they're improving them though. And the carriages are like tin cans. At 6'1 I can't stand up straight in them. And you can't talk to people when riding it because of the extremely loud shrieking noises.
Go to any other metro system in the world and the carriages are as wide as two cars, trains stop at sliding glass doors on the platform, shit straight out of mirrors edge.

You really don't know Boston... You can't get anything built unless it's through one of the unions. All development has to be coordinated through the BRA(Boston Redevelopment Authority). If you don't use union contractors, you will never get approved.

I love the Montreal subway.

Fully indoors, runs on rubber tires so it's smoother and quieter. It's also really fast.

Stations are mostly large, well laid out, easy to get to around in and well decorated (exception being that shit one at the intersection of blue and orange line).

And the trains are old but well maintained, and have a pleasant chime when starting which is apparently caused by the electrical system or something.

Of all the different subways I've taken, Montreal gets the 10/10 ranking.

LU is cheap as fuck. Yes the deep level lines do have tiny carriages, and it is a problem.

Not all the lines are the deep level tube size though, many lines use mainline profile stock.

The fact only London has a decent underground is because in other cities they are not required. The reason the whole concept exists is railways were banned in central London as they would destroy too many historic buildings, so companies put them in tunnels underneath.

No, it is a train. The wheels are rubber because the Montreal subway has very big elevation differences between stations and tunnels. The rubber tires are so the trains can climb up the steep hills of the system and handle the sharp turns, all at higher speeds than normal trains.

It's also a lot more comfy to ride.

The carrying capacity of a freeway lane is roughly 1800 vehicles per hour, or 2000 people per hour given average vehicle occupancy of 1.11 passengers. A typical six-lane freeway therefore carries up to 12,000 people per hour in both directions.
A double-track suburban railway, meanwhile, can easily support one train movement every three minutes in each direction without straining its capacity. A six-car train can carry around 1000 passengers before reaching crush conditions. Thus the rail line can carry at least 40,000 people per hour in both directions, and perhaps more depending on the signalling system and vehicle design.

It's not that. Honestly our subway stations are really nice besides the platform and trains.

However nobody waits at the stations for more than a few minutes, and most have tons of shit just above the platform along with the schedule of train arrival 30 seconds before station to tell riders to head to the platform.

Stations overall are much nicer but the platforms are not. Trains are actually really clean inside now unlike the 80's. Those that do not have an upper station generally have nice platforms. It's necessary for ease of maintenance due to Manhattan being a pile of garbage on top of bedrock literally. The whole metro would be underwater without the pumps and constant maintenance.

The bars at penn and gc are cool as fuck. Everyone who isn't shitfaced goes and gets numbers on the way home from the city proper.

That's a terminal, below are the stations, and below that are the platforms.

If you're waiting for a few minutes, the platform is directly connected to the street level, and is actually fairly nice. They have some good mosaic artwork.

It's unfortunate that New York simply was a bad place to build a subway. Imagine what it could look like without the architectural constriction due to maintenance.

And yes, technically when entering a subway, a platform and station are seperate things. Station is both platform and upper level with shops and shit, but platform designates only the shit underground because of flooding.

Source. I work for the MTA.

I don't understand why this happens. Like most of the montreal subway was built in a few years. Dozens of stations, all of it underground, very few made open air, and for a reasonable price.

In 2015, with massive technology improvements and shit, adding two new stations to the network costs as much and takes as long as the original dozen stations.

Shouldn't technology make things faster and cheaper? It's fucking stupid.

Also, white flight. Everybody lives in the suburbs. We had so much space to expand and such a small population after ww2. The projects were just temporary houses in the inner city for returning veterans and when they all moved to the suburbs, the inner cities got bad. They ruined basically everything.

It's getting better, but the shwoogs take the subway from Brownsville and east New York to shit up midtown south and poison stations near them and penn.

Someone has to burn down easy New York and Brownsville. The Bronx after. The platforms will take much more work. I'm not sure how they could properly fix the flooding. During sandy the whole system was basically underwater before the pumps lost power.

It literally floods. The whole system should not exist. Water comes from fucking everywhere because New York was a wetland, and without the exposed concrete, the subway would be a nightmare of construction.

When the pumps go out, or it rains extraordinarily heavy, shit gets weird. the other cities don't have much of an excuse besides they suck. Dc metro is extraordinarily nice however in most places.

>submarine cars for ny metro when?

>>55362567

It's just administrative red tape. The zoning is a fucking mess and the sandhogs have become cunts. That and they don't want to lazily slap concrete on leaks like they did with other lines because water is a cunt.

So that slows construction down to a crawl.

>tfw I'm going to have to slap concrete on that tunnel anyway and they're slowing construction for no purpose

Wat. Los Angeles has a population of 3.5 or so. Houston population is 2.

New York has 8.5 and is the largest city in the US. If you're going to count the metropolitan area and its suburbs, it nears 25.

For Houston and LA, I have absolutely no explaination. I assume they are just shit entirely and don't know how to road plan ever.

LA is a cesspool, and they couldn't even do highways properly on an untouched area. At least it's kind of comfy to look at the views in New York if you're stuck in traffic or driving on the bridges.

And Manhattan started as a swampy cesspool with most of the city being built out of garbage. Los Angeles really had to try to outdo it.

If you count Turkey as being in Europe then they have their massive Marmary subway development going on in Istanbul
Has to be the most complicated thing ever built
Whole thing is basically being funded by the Japanese government too, with all that money going right back to Japanese design and engineering and construction firms lel

I was talking about the lighting fires indoors thing. A lot of times it's in a car, they just light a big piece of bbq charcoal with the windows closed.

Face-saving is common all over Asia I think

Metro line 2 was renovated a few years back.
Metro line 4 opened a year ago.
Metro line 3 is a dirty shitline with rusting old soviet trains and rushing half broken escalators.
Metro line 1 is to be renovated into a luxury metro line.

Once I was in the city and I encountered a young aboriginal man. He seemed confused and distressed. He was talking loudly about how he didn't know where he was and everyone around him were robots and cyborgs because they all had headphones in or were occupied by their phones.

He was turning to anyone who would listen for a sign of what he would see as humanity.

So of course I blanked him and kept walking like everyone else.

>that's the problem, they do know road planning

That's a fucking retarded statement.

New York has been in development since the 1600's, was a wetland and a dense as fuck temperate deciduous forest. We paved over fucking cattle trails and wagon trails. That's our highway system.

Los Angeles and Houston were large areas of fucking nothing. They didn't build their highways until the 50's. They didn't build bridges. Houston lies over bedrock. They just built a few highways and called it a day.

There is no reason that system should be worse than the New York highway system. Fucking Robert Moses built ours in the 30's mostly going over age old paths that farmers used to get to the port.

If you weren't from Melbourne, I would say that you were baiting. You can't be this dense Nigger.

Wish we'd finally get a ring line here. Instead they plan to drill a second central tunnel, so we get two choke points instead of one, and everyone from the general area still has to go through the city center to get anywhere.

Unless you're in the NT, they're pretty much confined to city centers/botanical gardens.

In Brisbane they mostly stick around Southbank, sleeping in the little bits of fake forest/bamboo stands.
If you see a random dump of VB cans and a discarded blanket, chances are it's one of their nests.
They usually aren't dangerous, but they will begin vocalizing if they sense you have low denomination notes or cigarettes.
Once they start, it's best to back away, as their behavior, much like dingoes, can be very unpredictable.

Without a ring line, you have to drag everyone from the outskirts through the city center.
