I go to Rutgers University, one of the largest state schools in the US. It is nothing like this, but I think I can explain how all of this happens.
I've seen two protests in three years. The first was a protest against Condoleezza Rice's appointment as class speaker. I was literally there, 40 feet from the protest, looking into the protest from the University grounds. There weren't more than sixty students protesting. What happened is the media heard of this small protest, made titles saying "Rutgers students protest ___", Rice hears about it and thinks it's a big thing and she steps down from the appointment.
The last protest I saw was seven Palestinians protesting Israeli encroachment in the West Bank. Two of them were cuties (have pics) but that's besides the point.

There are 12,000 students at Yale. The celebratory swag circlejerk wasn't more than 150. That's less than 2% of students, the other 98% of which are violently opposed to this bullshit. But they aren't OUTRAGED. Every day at Rutgers I walk by conservative groups and pamphlets, Catholic coffee stands, pro-Israeli events and confederate shirts.
But no outrage.
A small minority of students, mostly confined to the Ivy League, are causing all the outrage. The opposing side does not even know where to begin in creating outrage.
