The article argues that Christians are less altruistic, on the basis that Christians were more likely to punish other kids for socially-undesirable behavior(IE less likely to reward them, which was their gauge of altruism).
And because Christians are more likely to be altruistic with their "in-group"(IE their family, church, community, etc), and not random strangers.
It completely ignores the fact that Christians are significantly more altruist when it comes to their "in-group".
Basically, Christians are far more likely to help other Christians(and likewise with Muslims). But are less likely to help non-Christians(or otherwise, random strangers). Overall, Christians are more giving, but they are more selective in who they give to.

Well, you could argue that helping people only of your in-group isn't real altruism. But on that basis, then people who support welfare and other assistance, only for citizens of their nation, and not for everyone in the entire world, are not altruistic.

Our government was pretty secular for about 120-150 years or so and it worked out pretty alright. You conflate secularism with socialism and that's very false and dishonest. Why do you think the Founders said there would be no laws establishing a religion as the first Amendment?
I don't think secularism in government should get the blame for frankly anything here. Christians are altruistic and so are socialists. It took mass amounts of propaganda in the 20s, with businessman donating to churches to keep them from becoming socialist, that gave this country it's weird idea that capitalism and Christianity are somehow compatible and that Christianity isn't inherently socialist.
