Most shootings are between criminals that are already federally banned from owning guns or being sold guns. Likewise, most weapons used in such crimes are stolen.
Even if a blanket gun ban were instituted, even with buy backs, you wouldn't get these guns back. You also wouldn't get them back from gun enthusiasts. You would only be taking guns out of the hands of relatively ordinary law abiding citizens, IE, exactly the people who we should WANT to be armed.
More importantly, even if you got rid of all firearms everywhere in america through magic or divine intervention, you wouldn't decrease the violent crime rate. In fact, it would probably go up, because then all a criminal has to worry about is whether or not they are physically superior to a potential target, or just get a buddy to help them. Just like what happened in australia
For some reason many western and northern europeans seem to think that self defense is bad, doesn't work, or doesn't happen. It's simply not true. In fact, it's a better option than waiting for the police, considering legal civilian shootings have a much lower rate of error than police officers do. This is at least partly due to the fact that civilian firearm usage is mostly reactionary rather than active, but still.
