General Lee sucked as a commander ... he was nothing without Stonewall ... he lost his first big battle after he died even though the rebel army was at its highest morale point, more equipped and fed than at any point in the war .. his orders were confusing and timid during Gettysburg.. he tried making it up for it on day 3, but his own thinking made him commit a huge tactical error resulting in almost complete destruction of an entire division ... he should have stayed on the defensive and make the North play the political peace game ... drag the war out was all he needed to do ... he should have just invaded the North for supplies and retreated without a fight ... but he wasn't that bright

They were vastly under supplied when compared to the north. The outcome of the war though wasn't cut and dry one side was bigger than the other. If a few battles had gone differently like Gettysburg, then the outcome of the war would've probably changed. If Lee had actually defeated the army of the Potomac he might've been able to keep plowing north.

Logistics.
The south believed that England and France were so dependent on southern cotton to drive their industrial economies, that they would intervene and force the north to accept southern secession.
Instead, England provided a few blockade runner ships to the south, while shifting cotton production to its colonies in Egypt and India.
Had the south toned-down the rhetoric about slavery(IE the cornerstone speech), they might have convinced England to intervene. But, once Lincoln issued his Gettysburg address, and made it a war against slavery, England's hands were tired, and the south would slowly be strangled by what was effectively a war of attrition.
With that said, southern secession wouldn't have accomplished what libertarians imagine. Libertarians have a fundamental misunderstanding of geopolitics.

But with a Republican President in office (whichever one didn't matter, it just happened to be Lincoln in 1860), their hard-fought attempts to expand slavery into the territories and to force its institution into newly-drafted State Constitutions (which was already going quite badly) would have ensured that slavery would die an inevitable death, as it was already doing.

Lee went into Maryland once trying to rally the rural people to rise up against the Union. When they saw a majority of the Rebel soldiers lacking shoes and no uniforms. They laughed the Rebels out of the state.
