You can literally never pay your hospital bills and it won't affect your credit score at all. Hospitals will either erase the denbt or settle for 1/10 or less the original amount just to write it off their books. Source: I had my appendix removed and never paid a dime, 3 years later I had no problem getting a home loan, and getting a home loan post-2008 is really fucking hard if your credit rating is even slightly weird.

Hospitals give really high bills in order to have a high starting point when haggling with insurance companies on what will actually be paid. They don't expect to be paid that much by the insurance company, or anywhere near that much by the uninsured.

Honestly, the trick is to have health insurance. It should be one of your top goals to get good coverage. I have had minor medical problems when I didn't have insurance and it was expensive. If your company doesn't offer good insurance or your job sucks you can buy a private plan. Then use the shit out of it. I don't pay a dime to go to the doctor and last time I had x-rays it was $58.00
