Latin alphabet is considered "cool" and "progressive" and "civilized", while cyrillic runes represent everything "lame", "retrograde" and "barbaric". It's one of the manifestations of the disgusting servility, bootlicking, and groveling before the "West" that is prevalent in the minds of our more liberal and less intelligent compatriots.
When US occupied Japan many geniuses from the US occupational government suggested the Japs move from their shitty runes to normal american letters. Liberal and dumb people among the Japs were for it, unsurprisingly, but the voice of reason prevailed in the end.
Another example, when Russia conquered the asian states of Kirgizia and Turkmenia and the like, we introduced written language to them in the form of cyrillic letters. Centuries after, when USSR collapsed some of those states ridiculously assumed latin letters for their language. Same thing almost happened in Belarus.
