The faults of having a two-party system in the US have already started spreading to the rest of the world. Liberal is a term used by and for people supporting the Democratic party despite this party being authoritarian left, and therefore very far away from being liberal
Neo-progressivism, or left-wing fascism, has become an acceptable stance in mainstream politics by riding on the popular word "liberal" not just in the US but elsewhere as well. A 1945 jewish communist convention held at Madison Square Garden in NYC decided that the words "socialist" and "communist" invoked terrible images in the public mind. Political correctness is communist propaganda writ small. In my study of communist societies, I came to the conclusion that the purpose of communist propaganda was not to persuade or convince, nor to inform, but to humiliate; and therefore, the less it corresponded to reality the better. When people are forced to remain silent when they are being told the most obvious lies, or even worse when they are forced to repeat the lies themselves, they lose once and for all their sense of probity. To assent to obvious lies is to co-operate with evil, and in some small way to become evil oneself. One’s standing to resist anything is thus eroded, and even destroyed. A society of emasculated liars is easy to control. I think if you examine political correctness, it has the same effect and is intended to.

Liberal has been coined by the left himself. The major problem is not that they did this, but that they actually framed America into thinking liberalism = socialism and actually self proclaimed liberals from the US have no clue what the real meaning of the world actually is.
The problem with liberalism is that it for a long period of time actually was the "left" because there was no real socialistic left in the US and the conservatives made up the right. Thus where in Europe the liberals were somewhere in the center depending on their exact political signature.
Since all Americans (few exceptions) are by definition sentenced and stupid, don't expect this to change.
