It depends on how brutal of a war you find yourself engaged in. In a total war all will be enlisted in any case and there will be few places to hide.
I would be curious as to the casualty rates of conscripts versus volunteers as well. Volunteers I would guess are more likely to see action, but equally are likely to among better troops.
