to be clear the leading theories have our universe at the event horizon of some higher dimensional black hole and all the energy in our universe came from a particle accelerating while falling then breaking apart at velocities close to c. from our point of view the particle just came from nowhere then exploded. this is just one theory though used to show that the big bang is a perfectly valid theory within our current laws.

also a finer point: all velocity is angular velocity so a "straight line" so to speak doesn't exist. all beams of light arc. this implies a lot about the ultimate future of the universe.

Actual theories about 'dark' anything in this field do my head in. I can just about understand Special Relativity enough to understand Time Dilation and why nothing can travel faster than the speed of light, but even then it's only for as long as I focus on it, then it's gone again.

It's just slightly beyond my casual level of math, my lack of interest in pop versions of the explinations keeps me from learning a dumbed down version that I might be able to retain.
