Any religion that has a large organization will seek to ensure that the organization retains it's power, especially in an area where they are the majority. I feel as if these actions are against the fundamental teachings of Buddhism, and it is certainly not the first time Buddhists have undermined people's rights. The vast majority of Japanese Buddhism supported the war effort. Many monks have taken up arms before. I always have trouble understanding when it is appropriate to take these kinds of actions when these monks have taken vows to save all sentient beings.
