My local town school district hands out free newspapers with current events to all residents. I wanted to inform /pol/ that kids are being indoctrinated by common core standards and that they are pushing something new I've never seen before.

STEAM

Science
Technology
Enginering
Arts
Math

Pic related is a picture of the newsletter discussing the changes in curriculum.

What does /pol/ think?

What I know is that modern "education", is a fucking joke. If you want to succeed in life, do all that you can to become independent in both body and mind.

Consider, they are howling about "STEM" even as they import shitskins from around the world to do the "STEM" work for half the money. Adding "Arts" to the mix is just salt in the wound.

Want to learn? Want to earn? Want to have a purpose in this fucking life? Join the military, see shit in other places. Risk your life to prove you are alive. Learn shit from books, others and just by living before you go nut-deep in debt for some bull shit degree that is worthless as soon as they had it to you.

In other words.

Engineering is not a fuck around degree, neither is good grades in computer science, math or physics.

These shit skins they are importing DONT have the same high quality education that these four areas do.

China - riddled with faculty encouraged cheating
India - same shit

Neither will have a fluent grasp of english needed to write reports people will take seriously. This part is fuckin crucial. Of a class of 40 people we had one asian that regularly aced everything, and he had the same kind of difficulties getting a job as average grade white people, because he wasnt born in a western country and wasnt fully fluent in english.

There's a good fuckin reason these companies aren't importing shit loads of brown skinned engineers and that reason is simple. Western engineers are better.

You know whats real crucial? Being white, speaking properly, and writing reports people take seriously. If they want an autistic code or algorithm monkey, they're welcome to hire non western engineers.
>>
>>55288888
QUINTS
Depends on what field you are working in. For anything creative, anyone with some arts background can be valuable. STEAM people could be quite good at design and stuff, they could be good at doing scientific journalism thanks to the artsy different perspective, etc.
I know it's a joke question, but one could very well make a STEAM major work.
>>
>>55289346

Arts doesn't literally mean art, it means anything not science of math related.
>>
>>55289026
So be a coward. Ride the rails like some faggot hobo from a B&W movie.

This is the problem with your breed. "I want" is all you know. If it requires actual work, sweat or blood, you run like bitches.
>>
It's not about artsfags getting more credit than they deserve, it's about forcing more brainwashing liberal arts classes on STEM students.
>>
>>55288042
>As noted, additional staff was hired...

This explains it. As with every part of academia nowadays, the school district is becoming ever more bloated with administration, bureaucracy, and teachers of useless things. Educators who are incapable of contributing to practical education have to shoehorn their field into the list of practical fields.
>>
>>55288949
>What I know is that modern "education", is a fucking joke.
After 10 years of elementary and secondary education, I came out the ass end of it all knowing nothing about history, very little about english - let alone any other languages, nor how to live in society, how to get a job, how to do calculus or most algebra - couldn't even do fractions in spite of passing all my math courses - and ending it all with no idea what the fuck I even wanted to do or be in life.

The best part of my "education" were the "non-educational" PE courses where we went hiking, played sports and shit like that. Where I learned actual interpersonal skills, and skills at least partially applicable in real society.

After graduating I've had to spend literally years - upwards of about 8 now - re-teaching myself everything I never learned in our modern public education system. I learned more from the internet than I ever did in elementary/secondary school. Just the fact that I was able to graduate from secondary without knowing how to do fractions angers the fuck out of me now. I've had the best possible years of my life for education robbed from me because it's taboo to ever let someone fucking fail.

I'm in college and studying for a degree in computer information systems now, intending to focus on network security, but I'm 28 and feel like I missed the bus.

Fuck public education. It's a shitshow and just creates a bunch of idiot lemmings. I'd still be one of them if I hadn't found places like this on the internet to get my shit together and realize how badly I've been fucked over and been fucking myself over.

I doubt you could do more than wave your flaccid dick at anyone so, no real loss.

My point is painfully simple. You are being conned by most of what passes for "education" in the West, these days. Get used to it or break free of it.
>>
>>55289702
Art is not science.
It's that simple.
>>
>>55289702
Sure. And as you see the bill for what you could learn by simply reading books, visiting museums and using your brain pan, drains you dry, what then?

It is not worth the cost. That sums up most of what passes for "education" today.

Art student here. There are applications for art and design in the STEM field but nothing that would really necessitate getting a degree. Other than needing a degree to get hired to do the job.
>>
>>55289744
Used to be.

The forms and precision required to recreate the human shape could be fucking masterful and absolutely deserving of respect and adoration. Some old world masters were fucking magnificent and what they were commissioned to do is worth putting in museums and preserved for generations.

But not anymore.

You don't get to be part of STEM unless your work is possible to scrutinize and tear down until nothing is left but the harsh reflection of reality. If you can't fail miserably independent of someone's politics, you can't be stem.
>>
>>55289901

>>
>>55288888
Depends. Industrial design, architecture, advertising, graphic design, GUI design, interior design, etc are all the "A" in STEAM and relevant if you need those skills.

But sure, hire a pure mathematician or a chemist to do those things.
>>
Heres the thing. You might pay double, in the UAE, for a western engineer vs a brown engineer.

How do you know the brown engineer didnt cheat his way to his grades? This part here is the most important part. No name asian university, straight into the trash lol.

What kind of practical experience does he have? How much attention does he pay to safety?

Chinese and indian plants are renowned for lax safety standards. Saving a few thousand dollars a year say, by not cooling your methyl isocyanate storage tank, and using inferior equipment that lets water leak in.

That's not the argument. Art makes science more precise and clear. Drawing and painting are great instruments into understanding. I'd rather have a plastic surgeon that can sculpt and draw well than one who couldn't.

Also, it sounds like you're all a bunch of culture-less and talent-less fags who don't have an appreciation for history and art. It goes quite well with the study of sciences. Why be ignorant AND educated?

that's exactly why STEM is separate from the A. arts people are just self conscious about being perceived as less intelligent than their STEM counterparts. throwing yourself into an unrelated arena is just going to confuse the issue.

if i were an arts major i wouldn't be trying to wedge myself into being a part of STEM for the sake of being seen as equal, i'd rather respect my own specialization as something that's diverse and just as useful, but nonetheless SEPARATE from scientific disciplines. this whole STEAM bullshit is just an attempt to boost egos.

That's not the point, the point is that STEM is supposed to represent development an progress. Arts has nothing to do with that and shouldn't be lumped in together.

>>

though i will point out, for any white males who aren't winning, that everything anyone tells you is a lie. you have to figure out life for yourself. i will say this though (what works for me):

avoid women and alcohol and only use drugs medically. avoid fats and hit the gym every day (if you eat turkey, steamed veggies, etc. you can eat all you want and it's damn hard to hit the 2k cal mark). get a 4 year degree in engineering (only the E in STEM matters... women in technology killed the T and the S/M have always been lies propagated by universities) or if you're lazy just go into accounting.

just be the best man you can be and the rest falls into place. just remember your biggest enemy is the woman: they're the flame and you're the moth.

I have, and I remember the first time I heard it. It was at a budget hearing and it was from the mouth of a public school teacher asking for more money. Thats pretty much what its all about: more money for public schools.

Its such a transparent meme. The thing about STEM is that the four fields are related. You use math in science, technology and engineering, you use science in technology, engineering and so on. On the other hand, art is completely unrelated.

When you bring this up to people pushing the STEAM meme (esp public schools teachers and administrators) they start reaching for straws.

Watch a movie lately? A television show?
Listen to some music, online or at a sho? Read a magazine? Play a videogame? Look in your closet and ask yourself why you chose to buy certain kinds of clothes for yourself. Can you describe how certain webpages look? What kinda books are you reading?

All of that is art.

I know it's fun to crack wise on art school students, but everyone's lives, from the present to ancient history, would be worse if we didn't have pictures and storytelling. And for something so important to our development, we under value art to a disgusting degree.
>>
There's nuffin wrong with a real art education. The likelihood that one of those still exist is pretty low though, and to actually earn money one would have to either become a concept artist for some kind of media producing company (games, movies, tv etc) or complement with a bunch of industrial design or whatever courses.

In all seriousness, STEAM is probably better for the masses, by encouraging more women to go into STEAM, they'll naturally be attracted more to the arts, as STEM is too difficult for your average woman, this way, feminists can't complain, and we as a species won't be held back because of gender quotas in STEM fields.

First, one should ask oneself "What shall I do with my pretty degree in ____?" Ponder that very hard within your 17,18,19 yr old skull as you try to figure out what will be marketable after 2, 4, 5, however many years and God only knows how many fucktons of Dollars in debt, you will be.

When I was a lad in HS, the "dream degrees" were Law, MBA (from Harvard, preferably) and those within the field of "High Finance" as a rule. Now, we have a glut of lawyers, no one gives a shit about your MBA (regardless of which school you got it from) and Finance types can be found offering to suck your dick or serve you fries (or both).

Learning about the "Arts" is a wonderful, important and fun thing. Doing so as the cost of most major universities is about as retarded a thing as one can imagine doing. Unless, of course, your family is filthy rich and can support you as you play X Box all day.

Some (mostly butthurt faggots) may not wish to join the military as I did. Fine. Join the fucking Peace Corps and enjoy African AIDS or 3rd World rape. Whatever. My point remains, actually DO SOMETHING in your early years. Learn a fucking trade. Learn to hunt. Get your pretty hands dirty for a few and actually have a purpose to every breath you take.
>>
>>55293908
This.

True. It would definitely better if they had their own dedicated schools, and having been to both a dedicated art school and a regular old university, the dedicated one was infinitely better.

Though I guess as long as there's money to be made they'll keep doing it.
>>
>>55293908
There's a difference between studying the arts and practicing the arts. The reason arts majors are a joke is because you can't become an artist from going to school. Talent cannot be learned.
>>
>>55295473
Think harder.

"School". What the actual fuck do you even know or imagine at 18 or 19? At my age, I look back at when I was a teen and all I can do is smile at how much shit I had no real clue about.

The one thing that saved me was that I wanted to get out in the world and see what it was really about. I had done my fill of sitting in a classroom, staring at the board.

Too many today seem to think that a degree is a promise of good times and riches. Ever notice how many of your group mates are living at home these days? How many are out of work, staring at their expensive degree?
>>
>>55295744
>Too many today seem to think that a degree is a promise of good times and riches

That shit was hammered in to us all through high school. I was half convinced that the schools got a commission for how many kids they sent to university.

>Ever notice how many of your group mates are living at home these days?
None of them as far as I know

> How many are out of work
Half of them are. My state's got the highest unemployment rate in the country, and the youth unemployment rate is even higher.

>staring at their expensive degree?
I'm the only one who's gone to uni, and I've got a scholarship.
>>
>>55295744
>>55296041
To add to that you do have a point about not knowing shit about anything at 18/19. There's a massive gap in maturity levels of people who go to university straight after high school and those who don't.
>>
>>55288042
Since the big new education meme is to encourage people to go into STEM because "america is falling behind/there's a shortage of STEM workers" a bunch of federal programs and giving orgs have set up STEM scholarships and grant money. This is an incredibly transparent attempt to cash in on that. It also allows liberal women to maintain the spotlight on themselves.
>>
>>55290263
>Art makes science more precise and clear

Are you joking? It makes it less precise, by definition.

>I'd rather have a plastic surgeon that can sculpt and draw well than one who couldn't

That's an incredibly strained analogy. I'd rather have a carpenter who can measure properly than one who can paint.

Arts in the sciences is just a bullshit shibboleth liberals throw around to keep the spotlight on their favorite subjects.
>>
Dude with an art degree here. It's not as useless as people make it out to be, I learned some very good skills in art school. However, the primary focus of art school is to go and make connections. If you want a job in art, you have to know people. You could make the most shitty and pretentious art you can dream of, and you'll probably get noticed if you have the right connections. If you go to art school and are a shut-in autist, you won't make any connections and you will end up with a useless degree.

What you don't seem to understand is that while creativity has an important place in the products that STEM students will be making in the future, "Art" has nothing to do with the actual practices that these children are learning, and the attempts to include "art" in the STEM rush currently going on is just more feelgood bullshit.

It can be refined though, and the rest of the less talented people can and often do end up working on the more labor intensive aspects of larger scale artworks.

There has to be someone to edit books, properly record music, and manage the camera for instance.

"Arts" don't even need a fucking degree, art academies and conservatories aren't there so you could get a piece of paper at the end of 3 years

God that picture's reminded me of something. A book I had when I was a kid.

Something something guide to the future? It was like a picture book type thing with all these pictures of what it would be like in the future.
