IT'S HAPPENING
>COMCAST HAS 300 GIG DATA CAPS FOR YOUR HOME
>YOUR HOME PLAN IS NOW ON PAR WITH YOUR LIMITED DATA PHONE PLAN
>FEES FOR EVERY 20 GIGS YOU GO OVER
>DOCUMENTS PROVE THAT IT HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH CONGESTION.

that's a really unfair advantage desu

Feels good not being a cluck and having the fastest internet in the nation that is also owned by its city.
>>
>>55285519
That's what we get for allowing the government to regulate competition out of the market.
>>
>>55285519

One of the few things I'm happy about Sweden with. My lowest cost option was 50/10, unlimited data a month for ~20 bucks.

No issues. No real downtime.

Getting jewed to use shitty internet and having no options would just be a nightmare.

They are going to lose all of their business once Google Fiber and it's competitiors expand.

We've had our ISPs raping our asses in this fashion for some time now.

I actually pay 10 bucks a month more for 'unlimited', so I wont be capped at 250 GB.
>>
>>55287620
Funny, I remember people saying "if we don't do this the corporations will charge us for using more internet"
>>
I have a friend who is still on AT&T's "unlimited" data plan for his cell phone. It is amazing the extent to which AT&T will go to try and coerce him into dropping it.
>>
>>55287134
No, Comcast has already been doing this in certain cities. This happens because the government allows broadband monopolies to exist and even passed laws that outlaw municipal broadband in some states.

At least people are getting pissed about it. Who knows, maybe the FCC will do something about it with all the complaints are being flooded with.

This has been in effect since 01/01/2015. This was piloted in several American regions during 2014.

I don't even download shit at all.
If there's more than 2 active internet users, your data limit will be reached each time.

Also

Telecom companies need to get fucking raped by the FCC.
They are allowed to monopolize entire areas for services.

Even if I wanted to get rid of Comcast (I do), I can't. No other ISP is allowed to service my area.
My only option is to move away.

Ex-phone guy. DSL now days goes at most 1,500m and hits a distribution unit which then runs back to the central office on fiber. Each unit only runs so many DSL links and then it's ports are full. The fiber line back to the CO can't be saturated by even 50/50 dsl if every port was full and use was at 100%.

Reported costs run data at about 1/5 of a cent per GB of data all in.

Netflix says on its site that a typical 2 hours of HD content is around 6GB that it streams.

So people that watch more than one movie a day?

A family of 4, where everyone watches 2 hours of streaming content a day at HD is 2 hrs x 3gb x 4 people x 30 days is fucking 720GB.

Yeah, pirates. The typicaly American family that watches half of what the rest of the country watches are now illegal pirates.

When 4k streaming comes mainstream and the typical 2 hour block is 24GB, you will be able to watch 10 movies a month between your 4 family members.

And you will be happy with your rations, because you are a piece of shit.

FYI Comcast is starting to fight back against Google Fiber in the worst way possible. I live in Silicon Valley near Google HQ, we were scheduled to get zoning for Google fiber this year but for reasons not specified they decided not to give the okay to set up so now we have to wait several years before the city will review plans to set up Google fiber again. Think about not even Google HQ has access to Google fiber. Couple this with Comcast opening more branches over here and introducing the new data caps. They're in the states pockets and stone walling any competition that tries to pop up.

If you don't regulate business, business will simply use people like Edward Bernays to get the people to let business regulate the government.
>>

This isn't about needs.
This is about bullshit comcast fucking over people like Netflix, because they have the pipeline as well as a product.

It's like saying the water company owns a lettuce farm but it's really popular to eat spinach instead because it's healthier and more flavorful, so they reduce the amount of water the spinach farmers get.
(Not a perfect example, since comcast is fucking the people consuming to get at their competition)

Honestly the only way to fix this is force comcast to not be allowed to have a service that competes with services that use their pipeline in their portfolio.

They have a limited horizontal monopoly with no real challenges and law makers enforcing it.
They also have a near vertical monopoly, with both the infastructure and content. Which they are trying to solidify by killing their best competition, streaming

Fun Fact: Comcast now has word filters in it's service chat online to stop you accusing them of rolling out the data cap charges in a racist fashion.

They started this over a year ago targeting the areas of the country with the highest percentage black populations.
>>
> streaming

Hahahaha
>>
>>55286852
And for letting the government interfere with Comcast charging Netflix for access. The response was Data Caps with overages. The one thing I wanted to see that they never discussed in all the net neutrality bullshit, preventing data caps with fees.
>>
>>55294128
what?
>>
>>55294195
Comcast rolled out it's data caps to target poor minorities in the blackest states in the nation. This is simply a fact. Those states starting being charged for bandwidth overages more than a year ago.

Also, while I was trying to get a rep to say something I could use in an article about it last year, the words racist, or racism were filtered from the chat. I couldn't type them and have them appear in the chats.
>>
>>55291143
There was a data cap that wasnt enforced because the federal government had to tell comcast that the letters they were sending were unethical and illegal. They had been sending shut off notices to the top 100 consumers of bandwidth, which is impossible to get off since you can't gauge literally everyone elses bandwidth.

And no I don't like niggers, but it's a poetic way to shit in Comcast's hair by describing the South that way.

Basically. The cap existed for ages, but they hadn't enforced it for about two years. They also give you three "free" months of overages, then add charges. The only notice about the charges coming was on one place on the print version of the bill only, and then only if you went over and used a 'free' month.

Enforcement of the cap had been suspended since 2012. The maybe real one time issue of network congestion was over. There was no good reason to bring this back, especially as they face increased competition for customers.

That is the thing. I don't think they even fucking enforce the datacap on me because I have something that monitors of all my download and upload speed and should have easily break any cap. It's really not too difficult if you stream videos, months a watch a lot on Amazon Instant Video I can easily use up a 100GB+.

What makes it even easier is when you have multiple people in one household all streaming and using that amount of data a piece.

That said, even most wired ISPs with caps don't really seem to give a shit and actually enforce them when you go over. Last I knew Comcast really didn't enforce their caps but maybe that's changed.

Caps are typically just defined so they can point to it in the ToS when some knucklehead is consistently using TBs per month or data.

Government agency is a huge problem in out country

When our founders wrote our constitution, they created a three branch system (executive, judicial, and legislative) that were supposed to keep each other in check. Legislature writes laws, executive vetos or approves, and judicial arbitrates.

Federal Agencies, however, can create and enforce their own laws, and are not elected, they are appointed by the executive branch.

You are also guilty until proven innocent when in violation of agency regulations. It's really fucked up

This is literally extortion

They're charging people for going over an otherwise unlimited "supply of internet". I'm not even kidding Comcast has gotten up and said "the internet must be rationed" as if it was a fine resource.

What they're doing is knowingly forcing people to pay for otherwise completely made up datacaps so they can charge overage fees that are so expensive it'd be cheaper to fill hard drives with data and send it across postal for cheaper

they do it because they know people can't do anything about it, they know they have a monopoly in the area and the ISP businesses do not actively compete at all and they've been shown to actively promote their monopolies.

Substandard coaxial cables from 30 years ago, used for delivering poor quality bandwidth to people then forcing them to pay for overages should they "exceed this limit" which is completely arbitrary and made up. They charge out the ass for shit speed and refuse to upgrade their infrastructure

TWC does this shit still, thinking that "our customers don't want faster internet" is like the water company saying "our customers don't want cleaner water"
