It convinces people that their entire lifespan is just a time to test if you can follow a sometimes arbitrary set of rules and suppress their urge to fuck during their real life so they can have a good life after death. I'm an atheist, I believe it's possible that the universe was created by a 'creator being' but in practice that's pretty much the same thing as the big bang. A being of that immensity is essentially impossible for us to comprehend anyway. That being certainly doesn't care about us anyway, and there's definitely no afterlife or human soul. Sure. Lets go with football. I played it too, I was on the O-line and a linebacker and was pretty much on the field for the entire game. I got on varsity my sophmore year.
The thing is I wasn't particularly athletic or strong. Puberty didn't really start to hit me until I was 17. I finally have a man's body at 21. The entire time I was just a lanky, clumsy, white boy.
What I did have was a very powerful temper and i harnessed it to push myself past those who would normally be my better. I had a girlfriend during those times too. On gamedays I would refuse to see her. Barely even acknowledge her. I didn't want to be happy. I wanted to have the proper frame of mind to obtain victory.
Happiness and well-being are not what drives humanity forward. It is the artist that hates the world that creates the most beautiful pieces of art.
If we ever achieved true happiness that is when humanity stop progressing all-together. Melancholy, pain, and fear are when humans truly excel at getting shit done. How many innovations have come from a direct result of awful war? I am not a religious man, but even I can see the potential benefits of it. People fear Hell, and so they do things that are of more benefit to society then themselves to avoid it. People suppress their natural urges. These feelings can come out in beneficial ways, such as my autist rage helping my football team score a win. Religion places the needs of the society over the needs of the individual. It is not fair. But often necessary ,I think.
