But for us, we stand to gain more than we lose. Being a state would mean we'd have to pay federal taxes, sure. But we'd get access to Chapter 9, full representation in DC, an actual say in general elections, and most importantly we'd be rid of some retarded commerce and shipping laws that are part of the reason why our economy is as crippled as it is.
The reason why you don't see any progress on the statehood issue one way or the other is because the island is and has always been deeply divided on the matter. So the issue goes nowhere.

For one thing because it was never an independent territory it was always part of a world power. Puerto Rico until the early 21st century was a destination for many Europeans trying to find a better life. Besides the obvious Spaniard ancestry, Puerto Rico has immigrants from other White European Nations. The blacks and mulatos are a minority on the island. For the most part blacks are seen as lower class in the country.
