The root of the problem is that one of the most basic tenements of Islam is that Islam will. must dominate the whole world.
They do not accept any non Muslims exsistance in the world, they only tolerate them as long as they can't kill or convert them.

For everyone blaming the West, how do you explain the period of time after WWII when there was no Western presence and the region was decolonized, yet Beirut was called the Paris of the Orient? Damascus and Cairo and Casablanca and Algiers, ect were all open, cosmopolitan cities. Women didn't cover their hair.
Look at a graduation photo of Egyptian, Iranian, Algerian, Moroccan, what have you, women in those pictures during the 50s and 60s. None of them are wearing headscarves. Now, almost all of them are covered.
