Because there is a certain sector of the population that benefit while the rest see almost none of it. They see wealth redistribution to people who are unworthy. And also the government bloat that is just completely unnecessary and creates more problems than it solves. Increasing taxes is morally justifiable if the current tax base is being used to its upmost efficiency. That means it is helping as many people for as few moneys as possible.
You also have to be careful with taxing this segment as they have the least amount of trouble immigrating. They need an incentive to stay in the country. So by all means tax them, but give them a break if they invest their money in the local economy.

It wouldn't accomplish anything, the extremely wealthy get out of paying the vast majority of their taxes through various means. Increasing their taxes just means more that they manage to get out of.
What we actually need is tax reform that closes up the loopholes and deductions that the top few percent exploit. Trump's tax plan is pretty much the only one that even bothers to attempt it, but we can still do better.

Yeah but most people who discuss taxes don't understand the simplest fundamental things about how they work. I find when trying to debate taxes with most people, I have to explain basic terminology and how things like withholding, tax brackets, deductions, etc work before we can even have a real conversation about it.. and by then they've lost interest.

As far as the general thought OP is trying to convey(muh 1%). The tax rates are high enough, almost excessively so, especially for people in the upper middle class.
What is horribly unfair is the various loopholes, accounting tricks, tax shelters, etc that the rich and the larger corporations are legally able to use to avoid paying any taxes at all on most of their income. You won't see this fixed any time soon as the people taking advantage of this are the biggest contributors to both political parties in the US.
