You don't understand. This would be an investment for him. He puts up money for a fake campaign for a few months, and makes ten times that back from the publicity it earned him as well as the support he gets from people like Hillary after she wins.
There's a difference between bad press and genuinely damaging ammo that Hillary has on literally all of the candidates who have any chance of ending up on the stage across from her.
Guys like Kasich are pretty clean, and nobody has really targeted him, but he doesn't stand a chance. He doesn't stand out and he just doesn't have the money. They know this, so they don't bother attacking him, even though he's made them all look like jokers at this point.
Trump KNOWS he won't win. Trump is a really intelligent guy. He knows that the American people, and conservatives in particular, are extremely predictable. He just shouts the things they want to hear, builds himself up as a great candidate, doing LITERALLY what his book says to do to succeed in business, and look at his numbers. But that won't last as the campaign moves forward, and he's prepared to exit when appropriate. But he'll damage them a LOT beforehand.
