It's already how EU works, you need to have shown certain levels of prestige in high school to enter university. There is no shortage of people with STEM degrees in US so providing government sponsoring only to those degrees is foolish. If you don't get a degree within 10 years you have to pay everything back over here. But in practice this ruling is not really good since it is such a long time period.

In the age where information is so easily accessible and so universal to people you can question the importance of a lot of degrees. A lot of knowledge that entails a degree is not tacit and therefore completely useless. To add to that, rarely are problems shown within the degree something that occurs in real life. But Tyrone, who was a good student but couldn't get a scholarship will be able to afford it. And Timothy, who also had good grades but is worried about taking on massive debt (American universities are notorious for extravagant tuition) can breathe a sigh of relief.
Unless Bernie says he will also increase room for more students - in which case you should address that argument directly - these threads are pointless whining. There are arguments against free tuition, but this isn't one of them.
By the way, you make fun of people who take degrees in politics, philosophy, art, communications, gender studies, etc. and say that they should have gotten a degree in something that would give them a higher salary to pay off their mountain of debt, but fail to acknowledge that many science jobs pay quite poorly as well. The chemist earning $40k/year is barely managing his debt better than the women's studies major making $36k as a sales associate.
