How each character is a failure and content with it

Reminisces of high school football days while working a regular 9-5, married to a bland retard of a woman and trying to earnestly raise Bobby to not be a complete fuck up. The story of his life is that he is archetypal small southern town man who doesn't really have all that much relevance into the broader world. The decline of the Hills by generations is juxtaposed by the three generations of Cotton, Hank and Bobby having nothing in common and struggling to understand each other.

A heartbroken unhygienic divorcee with the mind of a child who covets Hanks wife. Once a handsome youthful football player, he is now fat, unattractive and balding. He cannot take care of himself and clings to even the slightest affection or friendship which is why he is so impressionable by women or peer pressure. Bill is destined to die alone.

We already covered how the overarching joke is that despite his over-analysis and obsessions with conspiracy theories he is unable to see the blatant infidelity of his wife Nancy or simply does not want to admit it. He fails to acknowledge that Joseph is not his biological son and often Joseph is ashamed of Dale and disconnected from him. His wife for many seasons could not stand him and it took her years of being indifferent to him to come to love him again.

Before, it seemed as though Peggy only had an ego because she was ignorant. She didn't realize what a tool she was being. For example, in the Randy Travis episode, we see Peggy come face-to-face with her own mediocrity (Hank lectures Peggy on how she takes credit for things she doesn't do). The same for the Beauty pageant episode (Peggy comes to terms with her own mediocrity). We can also see some semblance of humility and self-doubt in episodes such as the boggle episode.
Later in the series, she seems to simply have delusions of grandeur and uncalled for narcissism. It almost seemed as though the writers gave up on Peggy's life-lessons, and turned her into strictly comic relief material.

Spot on but Id add that Hank and Bobby's relationship while mirrors Hank and Cottons is different. Cotton never really liked Hank, or at least thats what I take from the show, he cared for him out of obligation and responsibility because thats how Cotton was, but he resented not only Hank but his mother as well, which is why he treated both of them like dirt, may also be because Cotton hates himself more than anyone else. Hank on the other hand, wants to raise bobby differently than he was raised and genuinely cares for him but is unable to show him. The entire show is revolved around Hank and Bobby's relationship, all the other characters are extensions of that. Hank an Bobby desperately tried to relate and understand one another because they both knew thats the only way they would be able to show affection for each other, which is why in the series finale they finally find something they can both relate to and thus puts an end to the contention.
