In Flanders fields there were lots of poppies and for one Poet from England the only peaceful moment in the murderous times of WWI. He wrote a poem about the fields and the poppies. So it became a tradition to remind the people in Blighty.

I don't believe the people who did in the first and second world are in any way comparable really to the modern military and I think it tarnishes the whole affair and muddles what meaningful thought people can take away from the few minutes they give to it.
