To some, this comes easily and naturally, to others it simply doesnt. They're trying to get kids to 'really understand' math instead of just memorizing the standard algorithms.
So they... replace the old algorithim with multiple new ones like "making ten", and force the kids learn them all in turn. And in practice this will just mean more arbitrary memorization and confusion.
It's pointless. Kids who are just taught the standard algorithm know what addition is and they know how to do it, and that is all they need to know to keep moving up in math. Doing more interesting things in their head is a skill they'll figure out naturally with time and practice, it isn't something to just teach them immediately.
