My insurance refused to pay because they said my injuries weren't life threatening. But I wasn't conscious when I was put into the ambulance so it's not like I could have given myself a medical examination and decided to drive myself to the ER. And I have good insurance. I've been told since then that I should have appealed and if I appealed enough that they would have given in once it had cost them more than half the claim in their time wasted arguing.

Was at a hockey rink, slipped on the ice, face planted, busted my face open. A doctor who was there called 911. They loaded me up in the ambulance while I wasn't conscious. In the ER I got some stitches, they did an MRI, found there wasn't a concussion and sent me home. When the ambulance bill arrived, I called and asked them to submit it to the insurance company, they said they did and it got rejected. I called the insurance company and they said an ambulance wasn't necessary since my injury wasn't life threatening. In the end all I got was stitches and an MRI that showed nothing wrong but I also wasn't in a position to turn down the ambulance and even if I were, I'd still have to find a way to get to the hospital ten miles away while bleeding from a gash in my face and having recently been blacked out. Pretty sure I wouldn't have been legal to drive but maybe I could have walked around the ice rink asking if anyone was willing to drive me if we put down a towel to catch any blood.

It's the same insurance that the attorneys at my law firm that bill $1200/hr use. I always thought it was good coverage but now that I think about it, the attorneys can afford higher out of pocket expenses and since staff outnumber attorneys five to one, I wouldn't be surprised if they cut corners on the policy to save money. That wouldn't explain though why we have such good dental coverage. The ER costs were all covered once I paid the deductible, which was a couple hundred. It was just the ambulance that they refused to pay for. None of it seems very consistent.

I did it because I knew I had health-related risk factors running in the family, and I wanted to know whether I inherited certain traits. I gained a lot of other insights like that I'm a recessive carrier for some stuff I had never even heard about, or that I'm a slow metabolizer, or that my body responds better to high intensity training and better to a low-fat diet. Literally 100s of genetic factors, some if which made a lot of sense in hindsight.
Knowing my haplogroups or the probable ethnic background of chunks of my autosomal DNA is just a bonus.
The 99.- plus mail I paid is a damn good price for all of that.
