common core math teaches kids to do mental math on paper, which is pointless and a waste of time. The time is better spend understanding the fundamentals of math and how it works.

Or if you're going to teach them mental math, at least teach them a method that will allow them to calculate very large numbers in their heads using certain algorithms. Something like this

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mental_calculation

what their teaching now is just the basic mental shortcuts that most intelligent adults use to do math already (we weren't taught)

many common core methods are faster if you do the in your head. but pointless to do on paper.

kids need to understand and appreciate math before they learn these shortcuts

on way of understanding math on a deeper level is using number lines to understand subtraction and addition, or understanding that multiplication is actually the scaling of a number instead of multiple additions.

Common core needs to spend more time on those kids of concepts instead of superficial busywork

One of the criticisms I've read is that common core is taught too early. Kids in 1st grade are at mental maturity level where they are still developing the ability to associate, which is what common core techniques teach. So we are teaching association techniques to an audience that can't master association.

Common Core is easy to understand.
It lowers the Math proficiency of all students by 2 years compared to the previous system. This ensures a few things.

1) All the poor and middle class kids who went to public schools will have to waste 2 years, and thousands of extra dollars, at an overpriced Community College Farm because they're falling even further behind the Elite's children.

2) Immigration is going into overdrive now in the USA. A lot of these kids suck at math and school in general because they enter the system not knowing English. Thus they fall behind and get terrible grades. Common Core fixes this by lowering the bar so people can't point to Immigrant children failing as another problem with mass Immigration.

3) It helps the 30% of Blacks who don't drop out by the 9th grade do better too, since Common Core has a large focus on Group Work, ie. your kid is going to carry Jamal and Paco through high school. And thus "fixes" another terrible social stigma.

4) All of this makes shitty liberal infested Inner Schools look better in the end. The more kids that stay enrolled because school is super easy now, the more money the school collects. This is why LA Public Schools decided to no longer expel problem students, the teachers are under orders to not even remove these kids from the classroom for a timeout or detention either... instead they are supposed to "talk it out" with them. You can imagine how well that works.

5) The more stupid minorities and immigrants that manage to stick it out till graduation, the more scholarship money and class slots they can hand out through Affirmative Action (more tax money wasted, more debt generated for the banks, more big government drones getting pumped out into society, etc) while denying evil CIS White Males an easy path to higher education.

6) Its an insane policy, thus rational people will oppose it. Problematic people such as these will be labeled racists.

>>
>>55238623
it has good concepts, and helps granularize mechanisms.

But the english language is shit at explaining mechanical concept in a form simple enough for kids to understand.

so you get shit like "Make 10 with 6 and 9".
Rather than "Using partial values of 6 and 9, create common values to easily combine."
which you just can't expect a kid learning math the first time to comprehend.
>>
>>55246355
>Limits of 0 mean no limits.
A limit of 0 means you can't go above 0... You fucking idiot.
>>
>>55246030
You start at the subtracted number (12).

Then you add single digit numbers until you reach certain checkpoints based on base 10 until you must add a single digit number to reach the initial number (32).

The single digit numbers you added together would then be the total difference between the two.

The example, however, doesn't explain common core well because in order to add, you also have the reach the checkpoints.
So 3 + 5 + 10 + 2 should be 3 + 5 = 8.
8 + 2 = 10.
10 + 10 = 20.

Therefore, 32 - 12 = 20

No, in all mathematics ever a limit of something being 0 means that the limit of that thing is 0. The limit of 1/x as x tends to 0 for x real does not exist is not all the same statement as the limit of 1/x as x tends to 0 for x real is 0.

It is intentionally designed to retard the minds of whites and asians while at the same time providing an excuse to give credit to blacks and spics, therefore raising test scores collectively which grants the state the ability to claim that the system works and things are improving. Common core is 100% socialist dystopian nightmare fuel in it's purest form.
>>
This is literally just another way to stop boys from excelling in school. The problems are geared to go against common learning patterns in males and work well with common learning patterns in females.

Because they need more boosting.
>>
>>55252696
>>55252854
Why not teach both and whichever they excel with let them use it? I mean that would make the most number of people know what the fuck to do.
So sick of this us vs them shit when we have a solution that fits all.
Common core is still retarded though
>>
So, basically what I see is that common core is an obtuse way of replacing "carry the one" and "borrow a ten", throwing in about 2x-4x times as many steps, because "reasons".

I mean, it's not that dissimilar form how I do it in my head, but I'm still getting confused by this shit because of all the new jargon they made up, and the old jargon (that everyone out of school already knew) seems to have been phased out with more word salad bullshit that was completely unnecessary.

Feels like they are trying to revolutionize math, even though it was never in need of a revolution since it worked fine before.
>>
>>55239763
lolwat
So instead of doing 2 simple operations, you should do 4 logical operations and an operation that is slightly hard than either of the 2 old fashioned ones.
>>
>>55252938
>y not both xD

what part of it's intentionally designed to make your child stupid do you not understand? It does not help blacks or immigrants at all, it just artifically raises their test scores by giving them credit for demonstrating that they UNDERSTAND common core concepts. That is to say, they get credit for wrong answers but since they 'tried' they get a passing grade. It is literally bad for every single person it is applied to and is a long-con designed to retard everyone's kids while granting more funding and influence to the state so that they will have even more power over you and your family in the future. Common core is morally evil.

Another aspect of this is that since home schooled children will be forced to demonstrate common core competancy, which they will not be able to do, they will fail or get lower test scores which some suspect will then be used to make an emotional argument to outlaw home schooling under the pretext that it is child abuse and robbing children of their future. This is a full blown conspiracy by the left to take over the educational system and outlaw all alternatives.
>>
>>55253228
>I mean, it's not that dissimilar form how I do it in my head, but I'm still getting confused by this shit because of all the new jargon they made up, and the old jargon (that everyone out of school already knew) seems to have been phased out with more word salad bullshit that was completely unnecessary.

But it is necessary for the left. By forcing your children to learn new phrases, that makes it less likely for you to be able to help them, or in the worst case scenario, re-teach them. This makes your children rely more on the state and it's agents, and slowly erodes your authority over your own kids. After all, why should your son or daughter respect you if you are too stupid and don't know how to do a third grader's homework? I mean come on anon, it's 2015!

Coincidently, this also feeds in the to "it's current year" meme. If your parents are too dumb to do your homework, then the idea that the past was backwards and old people are ignorant holds more weight. New speak is mandatory in a socialist society in order to cut the new generation off from the old and isolate them. They are doing it on purpose and this isn't the first time they've tried. Just look at china and it's "simplified" chinese system. An entire generation of main land chinese people are unable to read the writtings of books that had the same writing system for over a thousand years.

And common core isn't limited to math, it's just the easist way to demonstrate how fucked it is. Common core english is more subtle as it uses lots of emotional appeals to make its point. But it too is dumbing children down. Instead of teaching children to read phonetically, it forces them to learn "sight" words, which horribly retards their ability to read books not on the school's reading list. But when you present them a book composed almost exclusively of the words they memorized, they can demonstrate 100% "literacy".
