I was born and raised in Holland, moved to Turkey when I was around 14 years old.
I spent the first three years in Kayseri, a city in the middle of Turkey. It was horrible. While the city itself was, infrastructure-wise, quite modern and obviously prospering, society was just as obviously stagnating. While all its roads are paved, there are no paths paved towards cultural westernization.
What do I mean by this? The people are not modern. They make attempts at westernization, however futile; mosques at every corner of the street make it apparent that Islam is the dominant religion and these ''Western Ideals'' people strive to adhere to conflict with said Islamitic ideals. Kayseri is a boring city; its people are boring, it's got little of entertainment for the ''alternative-minded'' people, offering only simple things such as cinemas, gaming centers, occasional festivals, etc.
After Kayseri, I moved to Izmir, which is one of the most western (geographically) cities in Turkey. Here, I have not heard the Ezan (Islamitic prayer that is sounded at prayer hours to call people to the mosques) in years. I have seen many atheists, Christians, Jews, Muslims. We live in symbiosis, we live in a reciprocal, warm society here. There's a rich mix of different cultures, open-mindedness is dominant and, albeit these liberal traits, a sense of nationalistic pride and family values is still largely present.
There are almost no niggers though, but I guess that's a good thing.
