They are the most secular people, bonding not over faith, but over culture. Their religion is forgotten. My Jewish side (mothers - fathers' side are pure Anglo-Saxon blue-bloods) are decent as far as Jews go - no bankers, Marxist professors, sleazy lawyers, or anything of the sort. But I could never have a deep conversation about America or American values with them. They just don't feel that connection. And like most Jews, they're uncomfortable with WASP-y ideals and traditions.
I've never really known any Orthodox Jews, but the ones who actually work (not the welfare-leech Hassids) seem decent enough. Still foreign to me, personally, but at least I can respect them.

I'm not sure how fair that is. My family does. If you asked them what they were, sure, they'd say "Jewish" first, but if you suggested you meant nationality, they'd very quickly, and with some pride, say American. It isn't that they don't connect to America, rather that they just see their subgroup, Jew, as primary.
This is only a bad thing when you are a far leftist who does not see yourself as American, at all. Or who would see themselves as American, but think that everything must be torn down and rebuilt in some totalitarian image.
It is worth noting, however, that I have never met who did not think of themselves as white. That also seems to be a progressive thing. I was surprised the first time someone suggested I wasn't white, because I was also Jewish. My grandfather was too. He had always thought of himself as white.
