The Buddha is kind of like Asian/Indian Jesus. He was a normal humble man that ascended to godhood the same way Jesus ascended to godhood. The difference is that Jesus depended on his dad for resurrection and to be given power into godhood. Buddha seems to have done it all himself. He beat the endless cycle of pain and suffering and reincarnation by ascending into "Nirvana." So Buddha is seen as some sects as a god, others as an example to follow like Jesus, and others both.
