The problem with socialism, isn't rooted in the fact it makes people poorer. Nor is it a matter of "freedom". Conservatives don't honestly support freedom. Framing the debate between socialism and capitalism, as a fight about economics and freedom, is a complete waste of time, because most people honestly do not care either way.
The problem with socialism, is its effects on human behavior. In short, socialism doesn't make people "better", it makes them worse, on all measures.
Why? Socialism makes people dependent. Not only are they completely dependent on others, and especially the government, for their livelihoods. They must use "the state" to both protect themselves from exploitation, as well as to further their own interests, so they are always in a state of "class conflict" with other members of society. Socialism undermines relationships, and tends to turn people against each other. It destroys families, it destroys communities, it destroys friendships. In socialist countries, the people don't talk to each other, and they tend to live alone.
The irony of socialism, is that it is more obsessed with money and materialism, than capitalism. Its entire philosophical foundation, is that people have a right to goods and services. That people have a right to some arbitrary standard-of-living, and the property of others.
It is the most evil philosophy ever invented. Not because of its intentions, but because of what it inevitably produces.
With that said, capitalism is pretty garbage as well. It is the philosophy of greed. And both capitalism and socialism, are inherently "international". They both want control over all of the world's resources. They are both poison.

Case in point. I'm a geologist. Recently we went to a landslide area to take readings. We do so about every 6 months at this particular site. The landslide is moving or creeping at 4 cm a year, about an inch and a half.
It has destroyed houses, driveways, sidewalks, roads, and utilities. This is money the city and state has to pay for. Each year they are forced to make road repairs, sidewalk repairs, fix sewers and water pipes. All so developers could sell $500,000 lots. Because in my state it's a buyer beware state. No laws allow geologists to prevent homes from being built, only to make recommendations.
Because regulating businesses is bad. and they need to be left alone so they can sell their houses to people who don't pay attention to the land their house is built on and then YOU pay for street repairs, YOU pay for sidewalk repairs, YOU pay for utilities repairs. All so developers can earn $500,000 a lot. And they keep selling lots, in a landslide zone and there isn't fuck all I can do about it.
I have a thousand stories of what gets put through. From building on fault scarps, to ladnslides, to mine tailings putting arsenic in your water supply. Because you aren't paying attention. Because 'unregulated free market' is code word for, 'as long as you don't know how we're fucking you in the ass we'll keep doing it.'

There is an assumption by liberals, that regulations on business are ever actually for the interest of the public.
Lets take something like the consumer protection bureau, or even the health department. The assumption is that, these kinds of regulations are for the protection of the consumer, and thus these regulations in some way punish business.
In reality, all regulations are always in the interest of businesses in some way. The health department exists for one purpose, to increase "consumer confidence". If you believed a restaurant might poison you, you would stop going out to eat. If you couldn't trust the food in the stores, you would grow your own food. If people were doing that, it would "hurt the economy".
The truth is, all regulations, or lack of regulations, are always for a singular purpose "economic growth". Liberals want economic growth just as much as any conservative. Both liberals and conservatives tend to be a bunch of materialistic, hedonistic scumbags.

Let me add, in this world, for a country to be relevant, it needs a large economy. It doesn't need a large economy because it wants to keep its citizens happy, or healthy, or anything else. I need a large economy to be powerful. If you don't have a large economy, other countries who have a large economy, bully you around.
Capitalism was invented, effectively to increase productivity of the sheeple. The governments which adopted capitalism, became richer, and thus more powerful.
Socialism wants just as much economic growth as capitalism. And somewhat ironically, the original supporters of socialism, believe socialism would lead to even greater economic growth than what could be produced by capitalism.
Socialism was very effective at converting an agrarian economy into an industrial economy. Because it allowed the state nearly unlimited financing, and direction of all resources, into building industry and other forms of production. The collectivization of farming under the Soviet Union displaced millions of workers from agriculture work, and moved them into cities, to work in industry. The same thing has been happening under the Chinese system for the last few decades.
The reason why these systems exist, and to the degree they exist, is because it allows for more economic growth. Yes, a quasi-socialist state can produce more economic growth than capitalism alone. It does so by effectively forcing people to work more, by artificially driving up prices, and mandating they buy certain services(either privately, or from the government). As well as being a form of market subsidization/protection of industries which trade internationally.
