We did have a larger impact on their culture.
I went to Japan several times and the Japanese view Brits as much more cultivated than Americans. They like American pop culture more but think Brits are higher in the social hierarchy.
They also think that if you're not white or black, you're not American. They are completely oblivious that there are Americans of Hispanic, East Asian, Indian, Arab, etc. descent. I'm Kurdish and no Japanese believed me at first when I said I was American.

Brits don't really give two hoots about Japan, we have no strong feelings either way.
They have never really had a cultural influence here and we don't worship them as much as Americans do!
For example: Anime and manga doesn't really feature here, neither does sushi . . .. dispite the American meme that british food is bland, most Brits feel that Japanese food is VERY bland and overrated but we don't hate them for it!

Are you kidding? The gun nuts are one of the few bastions of conservatism still lingering in our politics. The gun lobby is huge, the NRA is one of the most powerful organizations on the simple fact that all of its members are packing. It could probably be organized into the largest private military in the country if a leader were so bold.
If the government ever tried disarming the majority of the populace they would face stiff resistance from certain pockets of the country, some of them very large, like Texas. Some local police organizations would outright refuse that order, they'd have to call in the National Guard. I still maintain that even though the military is based on indoctrination and absolute compliance with orders, 30-40% of them would not recognize such an order, but that number is shrinking. Obama has been pushing the old guard out and installing left-leaning officers. "Don't ask, don't tell" is no longer policy, they're pushing women in combat roles, political correctness in unit interaction...
I think you're right in that if the government were to push gun control, it would be gradual. However, as long as groups like the NRA still exist, and muh 2nd Amendment is still part of the Supreme Law of the Land, our guns are here to stay.

It's not about martial law. But something that has happened in Britain, in the 80's when semi-autos were banned (AK47's etc) and later when hand guns were banned . . .it's not an overnight thing . . .you have an amnesty to hand them in and after that a cop could turn up at any time day or night following a report from a neighbour or whatever and search your house to remove any weapons . . .big fine follows . . .the same sort of shit happened in Russia, it's how it works! - It's not some sort of overnight purge but happens over time.
I'm not saying it is good, the right to go out and fire a gun is pretty cool, I wish it was easy for me but I honestly feel that the writing is on the wall for America with regards this!
