Umm... That's not really true. France has a slightly larger army but lacks experience and has less equipment. I'm in the Army and have done several joint deployments with the French, I think they are very good soldiers and second only to us in Europe.
As to the question; if France were the aggressor I don't think it would last long. Yes we barely have a Blue Water Navy anymore but it's still better than theirs and I plenty big enough for the Channel. In addition we have a lot, lot less exposed coast line and the potential landing areas we do have are much easier to defend.
With Britian attacking I think it would be close, and the outcome would really depend on the parameters of victory. Make their Army cease to be combat effective and degrade any force projection capability? I think that would be achievable. We have more manouverist forces with relevant experience on expeditionary operations... And a lot of fucking room to cut about in once the amphibious assault has been conducted. Plus UK Special Forces Group is a battle tested force multiplier. Clearly, if the objective was to subjugate the French populace that would be unworkable though.
Our army is in pretty bad shape because they can't protest budget cuts. Then again it must be the same for the Brits.
