They formed out of the Irish Volunteers and began an armed campaign to liberate Ireland after it became clear Britain was not going to give it peacefully. They (mostly) disbanded after securing independence for 26 of Ireland's 32 counties.
In the mid-late 60s Irish Catholics in northern Ireland (the remaining 6 counties) were second class citizens in their own country (in various political and socioeconomic ways) and began a peaceful civil rights campaign. Outraged loyalists began forming mobs and attacking catholic neighbourhoods and burning the residents out, while the police did nothing to stop it. Eventually some people had enough, and when another mob came to burn down a street they were met by a lone sniper who turned them back (think Korean gunmen in the LA riots), and the situation snowballed and escalated from there into an armed campaign for independence.
They allegedly still exist in the background but have ended their armed campaign, having won amongst other things equal rights and opportunities, and guaranteed political representation in government for the Irish nationalist people
