This is correct, it's meant to remove unnecessary baggage. Saying that God created the universe and just let it set there like a watchmaker means that if there is reason to believe the universe is eternal than God becomes unnecessary.
This is the problem with trying to use natural events where we can't explain the origin, as proof of God. It's just playing god of games and as soon as a naturalistic argument shows up to explain something it replaces the God theory. Because naturalistic arguments are much easier to prove and fit with what we already know about the world it's more meaningful.
So proofs for God's existence that relay on "explaining how stuff happens in nature" just seem to be defeated by science. The "you can only know God through faith" argument can explain why YOU personally believe in God but it cannot convince other people, you can't make an argument on nothing more than your personal feelings.
Arguing about why "religion is good" or "helps society" is not a proof for God, it's just saying the belief in of itself is useful even if it's all based on lies.
The vast majority of arguments for God are frankly self-defeating.

Actually no, The concept of Hell was added into written and theological tenets of Christianity as an appropriate response to dwindling usage of indulgences. Before its existence, Satan had been cast out, not down. There was no specific place he was sent, he was not a ruler. His punishment according to the bible would be isolation from God himself. The masses however needed something to push them to seek forgiveness from traveling friars. Friars would sell indulgences which would remove sin form you, for a price. Why buy it if there was no ultimate repercussions for your actions, unless your love for god wasn't enough. Religions do evolve over time to fit the business and theological needs of their believers.
