Oh yes always keep your guns really handy! I have a 9mm and .223 here on my desk. If anything really bad goes down the police even when they get here are just going to be outside hiding behind there cars until I call them and tell them that the guy is dead and I stopped shooting and they can come in now. No normal cop is going to run into a gun fight to save me. They will wait outside for like 12 hours until everyone is dead and it is real safe for them to come in. Police very very rarely stop a crime in progress that does not directly involve them.
And quite honestly if I am shooting at someone I don't want the police to be nearby since they would only make things worse. They might shoot towards me or me towards them and then it would really go to hell fast.

My rule is to always use the gun you want to use since you know it the best. In my case I am really not so good with a shotgun but me and that .223 can stop anything. The 9mm is super nice too but it can't go through walls* and really do the same shit load of damage as the rifle.
